A few days ago I wanted to change genre, after a season watching horror and sci-fi movies, I looked for a dramatic movie and that had a positive message. Self-improvement in the midst of adversity and I found this 2019 movie made in Ethiopia.

I think this is the first time I have seen a movie from Ethiopia. I don't remember seeing a movie made in that country before and I went searching online and didn't find another one I've seen. A few weeks ago I saw an ecological horror movie produced in South Africa. It is from that country that I have seen the most movies from the African continent.
Those who know me know that I love to discover and see other cultures through movies. It is a way to get to know cultures so different from my own. I wish I could easily get films from the farthest places, but although the Internet makes it easy, sometimes the language barrier is present.
At the beginning of the film we are told that it is inspired by real events. But I did a search on the Internet and I haven't found any information about who this story is based on. Maybe it is inspired by different cases, by the lives of many people who have gone through the circumstances shown on the screen.
The film is from Ethiopia , but the director and one of the screenwriters is German filmmaker Jan Philipp Weyl ( who also plays a supporting character). It is his second film, after Buena Vista Chico, which he shot in Cuba. In addition, the filmmaker worked and gained experience as a second unit assistant director in productions such as The Three Musketeers and Far Rockaway.
The fact that it is a foreign filmmaker making this film in Ethiopia makes me think that it must be quite difficult to make films in that nation. I would have liked the director to be someone from the same country, but I think Jan Philipp's work manages to show the reality of the streets and leaves us with a nice message of hope and overcoming.
It is not a rounded film, I think that in some moments it deviates from the important theme, some scenes may seem implausible, but you have to watch it with an open mind, willing to accept a different style to what we are used to. Ethiopia is an African country with a culture millions of years old, you can look for information about that country in wikipedia and other internet pages.

Creo que es la primera vez que veo una película de Etiopía. No recuerdo haber visto antes una película hecha en ese país y me puse a buscar en internet y no encontré otra que haya visto. Hace unas semanas vi una película de terror ecológico producida en Sudáfrica. Es de ese país que más películas he visto del continente africano.
Los que me conocen saben que me encanta descubrir y ver otras culturas a través del cine. Es una forma de conocer culturas tan diferentes a la mía. Me gustaría poder conseguir fácilmente películas de los lugares más lejanos, pero aunque Internet lo facilita, a veces la barrera del idioma está presente.
Al principio de la película se nos dice que está inspirada en hechos reales. Pero hice una búsqueda en Internet y no he encontrado ninguna información sobre en quién se basa esta historia. Tal vez esté inspirada en diferentes casos, en la vida de muchas personas que han pasado por las circunstancias que se muestran en la pantalla.
La película es de Etiopía , pero el director y uno de los guionistas es el cineasta alemán Jan Philipp Weyl ( que también interpreta un personaje secundario). Es su segunda película, después de Buena Vista Chico, que rodó en Cuba. Además, el cineasta trabajó y adquirió experiencia como ayudante de dirección de segunda unidad en producciones como Los tres mosqueteros y Far Rockaway.
El hecho de que sea un cineasta extranjero el que realice esta película en Etiopía me hace pensar que debe ser bastante difícil hacer cine en esa nación. Me hubiera gustado que el director fuera alguien del mismo país, pero creo que el trabajo de Jan Philipp consigue mostrar la realidad de las calles y nos deja un bonito mensaje de esperanza y superación.
No es una película redonda, creo que en algunos momentos se desvía del tema importante, algunas escenas pueden parecer inverosímiles, pero hay que verla con la mente abierta, dispuesto a aceptar un estilo diferente a lo que estamos acostumbrados. What is the plot of the film?
Abdi Getachew and Solomon Tefera are two children living in a deep and very poor rural area of Ethiopia. Solomon is an orphan, so Abdi's father gives him shelter in his house. The two children are like brothers. Solomon becomes interested in photography when a young photographer visits the village and takes them to visit the country's capital, the big city of Addis Ababa. The children are impressed by the city. Weeks after being orphaned, Solomon decides to steal the camera and leave the village for Addis Ababa. Abdi does not follow him, he stays in his village. Sport, in this case athletics, has a lot of importance in the story. Sport is one of the few opportunities for many young Ethiopians to excel and succeed in life.
Abdi's character represents most of these young people, who have extraordinary talent to become professional athletes and achieve recognition not only in their country, but around the world, competing in major sporting events of the category.
The film shows us the abandonment of rural areas, where people lead a difficult life. Where children do not have much of a future, only to continue working in the villages. The people in charge of touring all the rural areas, looking for future sports stars, are the chance they have to get out of that place.
Abdi, in a way, by following the rules and doing good, has an easier life than his friend.
Solomon, who after being orphaned, decides to steal the camera and run away to the big city. An act of madness. The boy will soon be absorbed by the concrete jungle, where there are other dangerous animals, criminals and the world of crime.
This character will have to live the most difficult moments. Poverty, hunger and desperation will force him to look for ways to make a living through illicit acts. When he becomes a father and has to feed his wife and daughter, it will be inevitable that in this environment in which he lives, he will have to do bad things to survive.
Sometimes you have to let go of your dreams. Life is not a paradise, it is hard, especially in countries with higher rates of poverty and social inequality. Solomon has not forgotten his desire to be a photographer, nor has he forgotten his friend and brother Abdi, but he himself, in a fit of desperation, chose the harder path. How many people does this not happen to? How many young people have to forget their aspirations? How many are pushed into the criminal world by life's circumstances?

El deporte, en este caso el atletismo, tiene mucha importancia en la historia. El deporte es una de las pocas oportunidades que tienen muchos jóvenes etíopes para destacar y triunfar en la vida.
El personaje de Abdi representa a la mayoría de estos jóvenes, que tienen un talento extraordinario para convertirse en atletas profesionales y alcanzar el reconocimiento no sólo en su país, sino en todo el mundo, compitiendo en los principales eventos deportivos de la categoría.
La película nos muestra el abandono de las zonas rurales, donde la gente lleva una vida difícil. Donde los niños no tienen mucho futuro, sólo seguir trabajando en los pueblos. Los encargados de recorrer todas las zonas rurales, buscando futuras estrellas del deporte, son la oportunidad que tienen para salir de ese lugar.
Abdi, en cierto modo, al seguir las reglas y hacer el bien, tiene una vida más fácil que su amigo.
Solomon, que tras quedar huérfano, decide robar la cámara y huir a la gran ciudad. Un acto de locura. El chico pronto será absorbido por la jungla de cemento, donde hay otros animales peligrosos, delincuentes y el mundo del crimen.
Este personaje tendrá que vivir los momentos más difíciles. La pobreza, el hambre y la desesperación le obligarán a buscar la forma de ganarse la vida mediante actos ilícitos. Cuando se convierta en padre y tenga que alimentar a su mujer y a su hija, será inevitable que en ese entorno en el que vive, tenga que hacer cosas malas para sobrevivir.
A veces hay que dejar de lado los sueños. La vida no es un paraíso, es dura, sobre todo en los países con mayores índices de pobreza y desigualdad social. Solomon no ha olvidado su deseo de ser fotógrafo, ni ha olvidado a su amigo y hermano Abdi, pero él mismo, en un ataque de desesperación, eligió el camino más difícil. ¿A cuántas personas no les ocurre esto? ¿Cuántos jóvenes deben olvidar sus aspiraciones? ¿Cuántos son empujados al mundo criminal por las circunstancias de la vida?
I found many similarities with films made in Latin America, where there are also productions showing the life of young people in poor neighborhoods. Although they are very different cultures, sometimes it resembles the reality of the poorest areas of Latin American countries. They are the same problems. Poverty, lack of opportunities, dropping out of school, early pregnancies, delinquent children, organized gangs that control the areas, etc. I know all these problems because I have seen them up close with my own eyes.
That is why, even though it is an African film, I felt it so close to the reality I have seen in towns and cities in my country. It was easy for me to identify with some of the characters and what happens to them in the story.
But it is not a pessimistic film, on the contrary, it has a message about the bonds of friendship and the opportunity for people to overcome, despite the thousands of adverse situations they face.
The filmmaker's intention is to give us a positive message. I am not a big fan of films with messages of overcoming, but from time to time it is necessary to see a production of this style, to lift our spirits a little. Not everything should be dark, we need movies that give us a little ray of light, a story in which hope is not lost.
It's not the kind of movie I watch often, but I felt very good about its ending. I found the story entertaining. There are scenes that were funny, plus I learned a little about Ethiopia and its culture, because as soon as I finished watching it, I started reading articles about poverty, sports and the lifestyle of the people of that nation.
I try to learn something new from every movie I watch. It doesn't matter the genre, it can be a totally commercial film or an experimental auteur work. Every film I see teaches me something new.
Running Against the Wind is an excellent choice for those who like dramatic films with a positive underlying message. The friendship of the two main characters is very strong, is it too idealized? Are there such solid friendships? Friendships capable of making a sacrifice for another person? I hope so, because this kind of stories, in case they happen in real life, are the ones that give me a little hope in this world full of evil.
If you are a Latin American viewer, it will be easy for you to watch the film. The story takes place in a continent and a country so far away, but with as many poverty problems as the ones we live in this side of the world.
I recommend it to you, so that after watching it, you will feel like going back to an old dream you left behind. To make you want to get up and keep trying, to get strength and decide to run against the wind of adversity.
Encontré muchas similitudes con las películas realizadas en América Latina, donde también hay producciones que muestran la vida de los jóvenes en los barrios pobres. Aunque son culturas muy diferentes, a veces se asemeja a la realidad de las zonas más pobres de los países latinoamericanos. Son los mismos problemas. La pobreza, la falta de oportunidades, el abandono escolar, los embarazos precoces, los niños delincuentes, las bandas organizadas que controlan las zonas, etc. Conozco todos estos problemas porque los he visto de cerca con mis propios ojos.
Por eso, aunque es una película africana, la sentí tan cercana a la realidad que he visto en pueblos y ciudades de mi país. Me resultó fácil identificarme con algunos de los personajes y con lo que les ocurre en la historia.
No es una película pesimista, al contrario, tiene un mensaje sobre los lazos de amistad y la oportunidad de superación de las personas, a pesar de las miles de situaciones adversas a las que se enfrentan.
La intención del cineasta es darnos un mensaje positivo. No soy muy fan de las películas con mensajes de superación, pero de vez en cuando es necesario ver una producción de este estilo, para levantarnos un poco el ánimo. No todo debe ser oscuro, necesitamos películas que nos den un pequeño rayo de luz, una historia en la que no se pierda la esperanza.
No es el tipo de película que veo a menudo, pero me sentí muy bien con su final. La historia me pareció entretenida. Hay escenas que fueron divertidas, además de aprender un poco sobre Etiopía y su cultura, porque apenas terminé de verla, me puse a leer artículos sobre la pobreza, los deportes y el estilo de vida de la gente de esa nación.
Intento aprender algo nuevo de cada película que veo. No importa el género, puede ser una película totalmente comercial o una obra experimental de autor. Cada película que veo me enseña algo nuevo.
Running Against the Wind es una excelente opción para los que les gusta el cine dramático con un mensaje positivo de fondo. La amistad de los dos protagonistas es muy fuerte, ¿está demasiado idealizada? ¿Existen amistades tan sólidas? ¿Amistades capaces de hacer un sacrificio por otra persona? Espero que sí, porque este tipo de historias, en caso de que ocurran en la vida real, son las que me dan un poco de esperanza en este mundo lleno de maldad.
Si eres un espectador latinoamericano, te será fácil ver la película. La historia se desarrolla en un continente y un país tan lejano, pero con tantos problemas de pobreza como los que vivimos en este lado del mundo.
Te la recomiendo, para que después de verla, te den ganas de volver a un viejo sueño que dejaste atrás. Para que tengas ganas de levantarte y seguir intentándolo, para sacar fuerzas y decidirte a correr contra el viento de la adversidad.
The actors are totally unknown to me. I checked the profiles on IMDB and found no other major works. Maybe this is their first movie they are working on. I am not sure, maybe if they are better known in their country and there is not enough information about them.
Ashenafi Nigusu plays Abdi. He is a young man with the physical capabilities to be a top athlete. The coach is sure he can make him a star athlete, one of the best. But everything will be destabilized when he meets his childhood friend again and decides that he must help him. For him, he is more than a friend, he is like his brother, who is going through a difficult situation and will do everything he can to support him. Endangering his own sports career. An excellent interpretation, very believable and realistic that the actor executes.
Mikias Wolde plays Solomon. The boy who dreams of being a photographer, but who will become a man inside living in the poorest area of the city, where the only way to survive and get some income to feed his family, is by stealing and doing jobs for the criminals who control the neighborhood. The old camera he stole and which has a broken lens is the constant reminder of a dream that seems impossible to achieve. Seeing Abdi again will open a door for him to straighten his life out, but is he really willing to do it? What do his criminal friends think about it? Excellent performance by this actor, with a character that despite doing bad things, still retains some goodness inside.
Los actores son totalmente desconocidos para mí. He comprobado los perfiles en IMDB y no he encontrado otros trabajos importantes. Puede que esta sea su primera película en la que trabajan. No estoy seguro, tal vez si son más conocidos en su país y no hay suficiente información sobre ellos.
Ashenafi Nigusu interpreta a Abdi. Es un joven con las capacidades físicas para ser un atleta de primera. El entrenador está seguro de poder convertirlo en un atleta estrella, uno de los mejores. Running against the wind I recommend it, especially if you need to see a movie that helps lift your spirits. I liked the movie, it was entertaining and I also enjoyed writing this review, because it is a different movie than the ones I usually watch and recommend.
I like movies in general, I have preferences for some genres and disturbing stories, but I also enjoy lighter movies that have a positive message, very necessary these days, where problems and bad news can cause us stress.

Running against the wind la recomiendo, sobre todo si necesitas ver una película que te ayude a levantar el ánimo. La película me ha gustado, ha sido entretenida y además he disfrutado escribiendo esta crítica, porque es una película diferente a las que suelo ver y recomendar.
Me gusta el cine en general, tengo preferencias por algunos géneros e historias perturbadoras, pero también disfruto de las películas más ligeras que tienen un mensaje positivo, muy necesario en estos días, donde los problemas y las malas noticias pueden causarnos estrés.
