There are television series that just by watching the first episodes we realize that we are in front of one of the best products of the year. This is the case of Mare of Easttown, which has the ability to take us to that roller coaster of emotions capable of leaving us breathless at every turn of the story.

The first thing I'm going to highlight about the miniseries is its creator: screenwriter and film producer Brad Ingelsby. Writer of the screenplay of several films, including 2018's American Woman. But whose best screenplay so far has been the excellent film The Way Back, a sports drama starring Ben Affleck that I reviewed last year.
I liked The Way Back so much that just seeing the screenwriter's name as the creator of this miniseries was enough to make it a priority and start watching it.
My interest increased when I saw that all the episodes are directed by Craig Zobel. Filmmaker who has been in charge of directing several episodes of WestWorld, a series of which I am an absolute fan. His track record in quality television includes episodes of The Leftlovers and American Gods. In film I remember the disturbing low budget 2012 film Compliance and last year he released the film The Hunt, after its release was postponed for almost a year. An insane movie that I thought was a lot of fun and whose review you can find on my blog.
Wait a minute. I have another reason to tell you that it is one of the best that HBOmax has released this year. The protagonist is Kate Winslet, an actress who like a chameleon transforms into Mare Sheehan and gives us a phenomenal performance. I dare to assure that her name has already secured a place in the next Emmy Awards.
The miniseries consists of seven episodes, and tells us a story of the crime drama genre, with a large number of characters and plot twists that will surprise us.

Su trayectoria en televisión de calidad incluye capítulos de The Leftlovers y American Gods. En cine recuerdo la perturbadora película de bajo presupuesto Compliance del año 2012 y el año pasado estreno el film The Hunt, luego de ser postergado casi un año su estreno. Una demencial película que me pareció muy divertida y cuya reseña encuentran en mi blog.

What is the plot of Mare of Easttown?
Mare Sheehan is a police detective in Easttown , a Pennsylvania town where everyone knows everyone else. Mare is divorced, her ex-husband, who teaches at the school, is her neighbor and will soon remarry. They both have a daughter named Shioban who is in a relationship with another girl her age. Mare is remembered for being a star of the village basketball team, but there she lives her own hell. Her mentally challenged son committed suicide over a year ago and she currently has custody of her grandson. Mare's mother lives with her to help her. The police feel their life is a mess because they have not been able to solve the case of a young girl who disappeared a year ago and the county plans to send a police officer to help with the case because Dawn, the mother of the missing girl is pushing the media, she wants the police to do their job and find her daughter. In the midst of all the family drama, everything will be complicated when Erin, a teenager who has a child with another young man in town, is brutally murdered. Mare will be pressured to be tough in a community where everyone is friends but which seems to hide dark secrets. Who killed Erin? What will the consequences be? Small town, big hell. It's a phrase that's said in many places, and it's very true. In the Easttown community everyone will be a suspect. No one will be safe from our suspicions, because it seems that even the one we least think of has a dark side, a secret they don't want revealed.
The first episode is perfect. There is an introduction of all the important characters, each of whom may be the suspect not only in Erin's death, but also in the unsolved missing persons case.
For Mare it is almost certain that she will never solve the case of Katie Bailey, who was a girl with a history of drugs and prostitution. She believes the girl is dead, buried somewhere or in the depths of some lake. But the girl's mother, sick with cancer, has nothing left to lose and will do everything she can to get the police to give her answers and find her daughter, it doesn't matter if she is dead or alive, she just wants to find her and get justice.
Mare's personal life is told with precision in that first episode, it's a lot of information and characters that appear in the chapter, but so well written and directed that we don't miss any detail.
On the one hand we have the open wounds of Mare's separation with her ex-husband. A relationship that didn't work out, but whose lives are still bound together by the teenage daughter they have and the fact that they both care for their grandson, after their son committed suicide. The boy has nervous tics that alarm Mare and Frank, because their son also had those tics. It is then that we see the fragile aspect of Mare, that present fear that her grandson will inherit his father's psychosis, which led him to take his own life.
On the other side is the stronger Mare, the police officer who has to deal with small town issues on a daily basis, while the most important case she's ever had in her career looks like she won't be able to solve it. The fact that the county sends a young officer, Colin Zabel, will make her angry and repel the detective. Erin's death will cause Mare to lose control and cause him more trouble with his friends in the community.
Within all the chaos surrounding Mare's personal and professional life, there is room to give herself a chance at a new relationship. A writer named Richard Ryan has moved to town and a spark of passion ignites between the two, although she seems reluctant for a stable relationship, the handsome man will insist that they see each other again. But for me this character is not just a love support for the protagonist, there must be a more important reason within the story.
Pueblo pequeño, infierno grande. Es una frase que se dice en muchas partes y tiene mucha razón. En la comunidad de Easttown todos serán sospechosos. Nadie estará a salvo de nuestra sospechas, porque parece que hasta el que menos pensamos tiene un lado oscuro, un secreto que no quiere que sea revelado.
El primer episodio es perfecto. Se hace una presentación de todos los personajes importantes, cada uno de los cuales puede ser el sospechoso no solo de la muerte de Erin, también del caso de desaparición no resuelto.
Para Mare es casi seguro que nunca resuelva el caso Katie Bailey, quien era una chica con antecedente por drogas y prostitución. Una relación que no funciono, pero cuyas vidas siguen unidas pro la hija adolescente que tienen y el hecho que ambos cuidan de su nieto, después de que el hijo de ambos se suicidara. El niño tiene alguno s tics nerviosos que alarman a Mare y Frank, porque su hijo también tuvo esos tics. Es cuando vemos el aspecto frágil de Mare, ese miedo presente de que su nieto herede la psicosis del padre, que lo llevaron a quitarse la vida.
Por el otro lado está la Mare más fuerte, la policía que a diario debe encargarse de pequeños asuntos del pueblo, mientras el caso más importante que ha tenido en su carrera parece que no podrá resolverlo. Que el condado envía a un joven agente Colin Zabel la hará enojar y ser repelente con el detective. La muerte de Erin hará que Mare pierda el control y le causara más problemas con amigos de la comunidad.
Dentro de todo el caos que rodea la vida personal y profesional de Mare, hay espacio para darse una oportunidad en una nueva relación. Un escritor llamado Richard Ryan se ha mudado al pueblo y entre ambos se enciende la chispa de la pasión, aunque ella parece estar reacia a una relación estable, el guapo hombre insistirá en que se vean nuevamente. Pero para mí este personaje no está solo para apoyo amoroso de la protagonista, debe existir una razón más importante dentro de la historia.
So far I have only given you a glimpse of the story, which we can see in the first episode, so I say that it is a perfect chapter as a presentation of characters and the beginning of the great mystery that surrounds the story.
There is enough time for us to become attached to several characters, especially Erin, that pretty young woman who is now the mother of a child who has hearing problems and needs money for surgery. But the father, another immature teenager wants nothing to do with her. He didn't want to have the baby, they share custody and he's dating Brianna, another girl in town whose parents own a restaurant.
The first episode and something that will be repeated in all the others, is the closing with a cliffhanger that will leave us shocked. It is a very used resource in television series, but in this story they are not introduced in a forced way. They are very well done moments that go according to the rhythm and the other twists of each episode.
The miniseries is not finished, many episodes are missing, but so far I can assure that it is a drama about Mare's life, with the additive of a criminal story where anyone can be involved. I think that in the style of the great series of the genre, the culprit is closer than we think.
For me, everyone is a suspect. I like to try to get ahead of the plot and there are two details that make me think who the killer is. In case I'm right, it will be a high impact resolution. But I'm hopeful that in the end I'll be surprised and sidetracked to another culprit.
Hasta los momentos solo les he dado trazos de la historia, que podemos ver en el primer episodio, po eso les digo que es un capitulo perfecto como presentación de personajes e inicio del gran misterio de que rodea la historia.
Hay tiempo suficiente para que nos encariñemos con varios personajes, especialmente con Erin, esa linda joven que ahora es madre un niño con problemas en los oídos y necesita dinero para que le hagan una cirugía. Pero el padre, otro adolescente inmaduro no quiere nada con ella. El no quería tener el bebe, se comparten la custodia y está saliendo con Brianna, otra chica del pueblo cuyos padres tienen un restaurant.
En el primer episodio y algo que se repetirá en los todos los demás, es el cierre con un cliffhanger que nos dejara impactados. Es un recurso muy usado en las series de televisión, pero en esta historia no se ven introducidos de forma forzada. Son momentos muy bien estructurados y que van acorde con el ritmo y los otros giros de cada episodio.
La mini serie no ha terminado, faltan muchos episodios, pero hasta los momentos puedo asegurar que es un drama sobre la vida de Mare, con el aditivo de la historia criminal en donde cualquiera puede estar involucrado. Creo que al estilo de las grandes series del genero, el culpable está más cerca de lo que pensamos.
Para mis todos son sospechosos. Me gusta intentar adelantarme a la trama y hay dos detalles que me hacen pensar quien es el asesino. En caso de que yo esté en lo cierto, será una resolución de alto impacto. Pero tengo esperanza que en el final me sorprendan y desvíen hacia otro culpable.
I have no words to describe the sensations that the actress Kate Winslet has made me feel playing Mare Sheehan. From the moment we see her from the back in her first appearance and then admire her face in close-up we stop seeing the actress to see the woman she plays. A middle-aged woman, who has spent her whole life in that place and that behind that strength she transmits, is a woman who is enduring great pain.

The maturity, the wrinkles and even her extra pounds, make her character believable and quickly win the hearts of the viewers. A character that only an actress with her talent is able to transform it into something great. I bet we will see her nominated at the Emmy Awards.

Julianne Nicholson plays Lori Ross, married to John Ross. They both have two children and John is related to Erin's father. As always the actress shines in any role she is cast in, she is an actress I admire and in this case she is a supporting character that serves as a prop for Mare. The husband's character makes me very suspicious.

*Jean Smart plays Helen, Mare's mother. She has moved into her daughter's home to help her with domestic issues and childcare. She is very outspoken and direct in her manner. She is friends with Mare's ex-husband and is a very witty character. The relationship between the two may seem difficult at times, but they are actually very close.

She was one of the last people to see Erin alive. I don't rule her out as a possible suspect, although maybe things will come out, I don't think the writer will dare to make such a big twist. What I am sure of is that she is hiding something, she hasn't told the whole truth.
David Denman plays Frank Seehan, Mare's ex-husband who is happily engaged to another woman in town. He is a teacher and taught Erin, soon the story will take a turn in which he will be involved, will it be true, what will be the consequences, what will be Mare's reaction?
Patrick Murney plays Kenny McMenamin, Erin's father. When he learns the terrible news, his desire for revenge drives him to commit a horrible act. His daughter's death triggers many events and hidden things will come to light.

Evan Peters, the actor famous for American Horror Story, plays Detective Colin Zabel, the officer who is sent by the county to support the investigation into Erin's death and Katie's disappearance. He will have a hard time gaining the trust of Mare, who is very upset that a young cop is being sent to meddle in her work.
Enid Graham plays Dawn Bailey. She has cancer and will move heaven and earth to put pressure on the police to solve her daughter's disappearance. Many people in town support her, they are tired of Mare not doing her job and solving the case.
James McArdle plays Deacon Mark Burton. He is one of my prime suspects. There's something about this man's attitude that I don't quite like. I can tell he's hiding something. Erin was attending church for a while. My gut tells me that a little more research needs to be done on this character. I also don't leave out the priest Dan Hastings played by actor Neal Huff.
Sosie Bacon plays Carrie Layden. Erin's best friend and the only one who apparently knows a big secret that will cause an incredible scandal. She will be greatly affected by the death of her friend. Although so many tears don't make me rule her out entirely. For me the murderer is the least expected.
The extensive list of characters is very long. Some are minor characters, but they still carry weight within the story. All the actors and actresses fit their roles. That speaks very well of the quality of the series, formed by an impressive cast.
Evan Peters, el actor famoso por American Horror Story, interpreta al detective Colin Zabel, el agente que es enviado por el condado para que apoye en la investigación de la muerte de Erin y la desaparición de Katie. Guy Pierce plays Richard Ryan, the writer who has just moved to town and meets Mare at the bar. He is a relatively successful writer, handsome and seductive. A relationship begins between the two of them, although Mare is a difficult woman because of all the family problems that affect her. Richard seems enchanted by her. Is this character just a love interest or is she hiding a secret?
Guy Pierce interpreta a Richard Ryan, el escritor que se acaba de mudar al pueblo y conoce e Mare en el Bar. Es un escritor de relativo y éxito, guapo y seductor. Comenzara una relación entre ambos, aunque Mare es una mujer difícil por todos los problemas familiares que le afectan. Richard parece encantado por ella. ¿Este personaje solo será el interés amoroso o esconde algún secreto?
Cailee Spaeny plays Erin McMenamin. The young woman we meet in the first episode, who is having a difficult time living at home with her father and with the baby needing surgery. Her death is the mystery to be solved in the miniseries, in addition to a series of terrible events. She has a secret that she has hidden and that only her best friend knows. Something that will surprise the whole town.
Cailee Spaeny interpreta a Erin McMenamin. La joven que conocemos en el primer episodio, que está pasando por una situación difícil viviendo en casa de su padre y con el bebe que necesita una cirugía. Su muerte es el misterio a resolver, además es el detonante de otros terribles hechos. Ella tiene un secreto que ha escondido y solo lo sabe su mejor amiga. Algo que sorprenderá a todos.
Cinematography is by Ben Richardson, a British cinematographer whose most important works have been Beasts of the Southern Wild and The Fault in Our Stars. In the series he does a solid job, capturing a style similar to that used by the series creator in the film with Ben Affleck.
The atmosphere of a town in decay, where drugs have wreaked havoc on the young population. A place where no one would want to live, but from which Mare seems unwilling to escape. The setting intensifies the drama that the characters in the story must live through.
Mare of Easttown is one of the great HBO series so far this year. Although there are still episodes to air and we don't know if they will give it an ending at the same level they are showing. I am optimistic that they will surprise us.
Just to enjoy Kate Winslet's performance is worth watching. In total there will be seven episodes. A short miniseries. You can watch each episode weekly, old school style or wait until it airs in its entirety and watch it in marathon.

La atmósfera de un pueblo en decadencia, donde las drogas han hecho estragos en la población joven. Un lugar donde nadie querría vivir, pero del cual Mare parece no querer escapar. La ambientación intensifica el drama que deben vivir los personajes de la historia.
Mare of Easttown es uno de los grandes estenos de HBO en lo que va del año. A pesar de que faltan episodios por emitir y sin saber si le darán un final al mismo nivel que están demostrando. Soy optimista y creo que nos van a sorprender.
Solamente por disfrutar de la actuación de Kate Winslet vale la penar verla. En total serán siete episodios. Una mini serie corta. Puedes ver cada episodio semanalmente, al estilo de la vieja escuela o esperar que los emita todo y verlas en un maratón.
