The Unholy has the backing of Sam Raimi as one of its producers. Is that enough of an endorsement? I thought so, but even good filmmakers make mistakes. Most people know him for being the director of the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire, but his beginnings come from independent horror films, with the cult hit Evil Dead.

Raimi has invested money in making this film and I can tell he has wasted money . The worst thing a horror movie can have, is that it doesn't produce fear or have scenes that shock.
A few weeks ago I was very disappointed with Things Heard & Seen because the people in charge of directing are well known filmmakers venturing into the supernatural genre for the first time.
I think something similar is true of The Unholy. This is the directorial debut of screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos. Author of scripts for hit films like the 2017 version of Beauty and the Beast, The Huntsman: Winter's War and has also written flops, like the latest version of Charlie's Angels. Hahaha.
I checked his track record on his IMDB profile and he has been involved in several animated children's film projects. But I didn't find any pure horror scripts in his filmography. Only the one for this movie, which is an adaptation of a James Herbert novel.
I have a lot of respect for the horror genre and it has certain rules that must be followed. It doesn't matter that the story doesn't offer anything original, but if you manage to make the viewer jump out of his seat with some scenes, have well-built characters and really disturbing scenes, you'll have a guaranteed success.
On the contrary, this film that could have been a good work of the genre, succumbs to its own ambitions with a clumsily adapted script and bad direction. Sorry Spiliotopoulos, but you should stick to writing and leave the job of director to a horror expert.

Raimi ha puesto dinero para hacer esta película y le puedo decir que perdió esos reales. Lo peor que puede tener una película de terror, es que no produzca temor ni tenga escenas que causen impacto.
Hace unas semanas tuve una gran decepción con el film Things Heard & Seen porque los encargados de la dirección son reconocidos cineastas que se aventuran por primera vez en el género de lo sobrenatural.
Creo que ocurre algo similar con The Unholy. Es el dbut como director del guionista Evan Spiliotopoulos. Autor de los guiones de películas de éxito como la versión de La bella y la Bestia del año 2017, The Huntsman: Winter's War y también ha escrito fracasos, como la última versión de Los Ángeles de Charlie. Jajaja.
Me puse a revisar su trayectoria en el perfil de IMDB y ha estado involucrado en varios proyectos de películas infantiles animadas. Pero no encontré ningún guion de terror puro en su filmografía. Solo el de esta película, que es una adaptación de una novela de James Herbert.
Respeto mucho el género de terror y tiene ciertas normas que hay cumplir. No importa que la historia no ofrezca nada original, pero si logras que los espectadores salten de su asiento con algunas escenas, que tenga personajes bien construidos y escenas realmente perturbadoras, tendrás éxito asegurado.
Al contrario, este film pudo ser una buena obra del género, sucumbe ante sus propias ambiciones con un guion torpemente adaptado y una mala dirección. Lo siento Spiliotopoulos, pero debes quedarte escribiendo y dejarle la labor de dirección a una persona experta en el terror.
What is the plot of The Unholy?
Gerry Fenn is a journalist who used to be famous, but for making up stories he was fired from a big newspaper. Now he does small jobs. Doing a story in a rural village he meets a girl named Alice Pagett, a deaf and mute young woman who, miraculously, begins to speak and says that the Virgin Mary speaks to her. Everyone in the village is impressed and soon the news goes viral. Fenn sees a great opportunity to become a glory of journalism again, as he is the one who has exclusive access to Alice. The Vatican sends its emissaries to determine the truth about the miracles performed by Alice and possibly turn the place into a shrine. Is it a real miracle? Is it Mary communicating with Alice? What happened in 1845 in that village? Is it a work of God or the devil? What is the purpose of the supernatural force behind it all?

My opinion
I'll start with the positive: it has some good points about some relevant issues and I'm sure they come from the novel.
The first is the role of the media and journalists in the news we consume. The protagonist and hero is a man who worked for the best newspaper in the country, but was execrated when it was discovered that he made up many of the stories. He was a journalist who fabricated the news to gain notoriety and prestige. Something many do today, to gain digital media hits and fame.
The second argument is the role of the Church, in this case the Catholic Church, as the entity that makes the decisions of what to say and what to hide in these cases of alleged miracles. Behind this, there is actually a business behind it. When a place is declared a sanctuary, it influences the economic activity of the region. They know that such a place will attract devotees and tourists, fostering a whole industry in which they also obtain economic benefits.
The third positive argument is to see how human beings can be easily manipulated, blinded by religious dogma. Making us believe in things that really are not. That is why so many false prophets abound in all religions that exist, pushing the human being to states of incredible fanaticism.

Comenzare con lo positivo: tiene unos buenos planteamientos sobre algunos temas relevantes y estoy seguro que provienen de la novela.
El primero es el papel de los medios de comunicación y los periodistas en las noticias que consumimos. El personaje protagonista y héroe es un hombre que estuvo trabajando para el mejor periódico del país, pero fue execrado cuando se descubrió que inventaba muchas de las historias. Era un periodista que fabricaba las noticias para obtener notoriedad y prestigio. Algo que hacen muchos en la actualidad, para obtener visitas en medios digitales y fama.
El segundo argumento es el rol de la Iglesia, en este caso la católica, como ente que toma las decisiones de lo que se debe decir y lo que se oculta en estos casos de supuestos milagros. Detrás de ello, se esconde en realidad un negocio. Cuando un lugar es declarado santuario, influye en la actividad económica de la región. Saben que dicho espacio llamara a devotos y turistas, fomentando toda una industria donde ellos también obtienen beneficios económicos.
El tercer argumento positivo es ver como el ser humano puede ser manipulado fácilmente, cegado ante un dogma religioso. Haciéndonos creer en cosas que realmente no son. Por eso abundan tantos falsos profetas en todas las religiones que existen, empujando a los humanos a estados de fanatismo increíbles.
these points are touched upon in the story, but it does not go deeper into them. Let's remember that the film tries to go down the path of terror. That is where it fails. It clashes with its own ambitions to be terrifying and what it does is to string together increasingly ridiculous scenes.
You have to know how to tell the difference. There are horror movies that mix comedy: but The Unholy treats all its plot with a lot of seriousness, this is not comedy, but several of its scenes made me laugh because of how poorly executed they are. What bothers me is that there is money invested, it's not an independent movie made by a group of friends. It's Sam Raimi producing and Sony Pictures Entertainment distributing. That's why my review is harsher than usual.
The story is predictably told. Besides making a big mistake, the mystery is unraveled in the opening sequence. That is, what could have served to keep the viewer guessing whether it's a divine work or an act of evil forces, the director gives it all away. Has this guy actually seen horror movies? Hell, I don't think so.
Todos esos puntos son tocados en la historia, pero no se profundiza en ellos. Recordemos que la película intenta ir por el camino del terror. Es allí donde falla. Choca con sus propias ambiciones de ser terrorífica y lo que hace es enlazar escenas cada vez más ridículas.
Hay que saber diferenciar. Hay films de terror que mezclan comedia: pero The Unholy trata todo su argumento muy en serio, esto no es comedia, pero varias de sus escenas me hicieron reír de lo mal ejecutadas. Lo que me molesta es que hay dinero invertido, no es una película independiente hecha por un puñado de amigos. Es Sam Raimi produciendo y Sony Pictures Entertainment distribuyéndola. Por eso mi crítica es más dura de lo habitual.
La historia es contada de manera predecible. Además de cometer un gran error, nos develan el misterio en la secuencia inicial. O sea, lo que pudo servir como forma de mantener al espectador dudando si es una obra divina o un acto de las fuerzas malignas, el director lo destripa todo. ¿Este hombre en realidad ha visto películas de horror? Joder, yo creo que no.
Jump scares cause the opposite effect. They are so predictable that instead of scaring, they produce tedium. Digital effects are bad. They detract from the believability of everything we see. I have seen TV series with better visual effects.
Our hero, the protagonist, the character who will have the biggest change, but it happens suddenly, goes to bed a man willing to sell his soul to the devil to become a successful person again and wakes up feeling he must do the right thing and unmask the force of evil. There is no believable transformation of the character, no matter how hard the actor tries to give him nuance. No one changes that drastically from one day to the next.
For me, as a horror movie it doesn't work. To watch it on a day when you have nothing else to do, then it will work. That's my point of view. There is no gore, there are no scenes that shocked me and I didn't see anything disturbing. My rating is low, but I recommend you watch it and let me know if you think otherwise.
Los Jump Scare causan el efecto contrario. Son tan predecibles que en vez de susto, producen tedio. Los efectos digitales son malos. Restando credibilidad a todo lo que vemos. He visto series de televisión con mejores efectos visuales.
Nuestro héroe, el protagonista , el personaje que tendrá el mayor cambio, pero eso ocurre de repente, se acuesta siendo un hombre dispuesto a vender el alma al diablo con tal de volver a ser una persona de éxito y se despierta sintiendo que debe hacer lo correcto y desenmascarar a la fuerza del mal. No hay una transformación creíble del personaje, por mucho que el actor intente darle matices. Nadie cambia tan drásticamente de un día para otro.
Para mí, como película de terror no funciona. Para verla un día que no tengas más nada que hacer, entonces servirá. Es mi punto de vista. No hay gore, escenas que me impactaran y no vi nada perturbador. Mi valoración es baja, pero te recomiendo verla y decirme si opinas lo contrario.

The actress gives a correct interpretation, reflecting the naivety and strength the character needed.

William Adler plays Father Hagan, Alice's uncle and leader of the village parish. Katie Aselton is Dr. Natalie Gates, friend of the priest, who will be Gerry's ally when they discover the truth behind the miracles. Actor Diogo Morgado plays Monsignor Delgarde, sent by the Vatican to find any evidence of falsehood in the miracles. A character too handsome to believe he is a priest. Cary Elwel plays Archbishop Gyles, who will protect the Vatican's interests, i.e. business. Marina Mazepa is the actress who plays Mary Elnor, a key character in the whole story.

The Unholy is a disappointment as a horror film. The director doesn't get it right, a bad start for his first film behind the camera. I hope he learns his lesson and stays on as a screenwriter. He currently has two scripts shot and in pre-production.

The Unholy es una decepción como película del género de terror. El director no logra acertar, un mal comienzo para ser su primera película detrás de las cámaras.
