Is Splinterlands a good investment? 11 Months Later ...
Hello hivers,
more than 11 months (precisely 11 months and 7 days) have passed since I registered to the beautiful game of Splinterlands.
Every month I do some calculations and write a report to evaluate Splinterlands not as a game but as an investment.
And here I am writing my eleventh report on Splinterlands.
My reports can be useful for those who are thinking of registering on Splinterlands and want to have an idea about what Splinterlands offers besides the gaming aspect.
At the end of this post you will find links to my previous ten monthly reports.

Report Topics
Here are the topics that I will cover in this monthly report:
- Previous Report Result
- Cards Purchased and Cards Sold in September.
- Power/$ ratio
- Purchasing Strategy
- Valuation of Splinterlands as Investment
- Total Costs
- Total Revenues
- Value of my card collection
- Value of accumulated DEC tokens
- Calculation Profit/Loss
- ROI
- Final Considerations
- Links to previous Reports
Previous Report Result
The starting point for evaluating Splinterlands as an investment is the result of the previous monthly report.
After eleven months I achieved a total profit of 44,014 $ and a ROI of 16.99% compared to a total investment of 259,100 $.

Cards bought and sold in September
In September I did not buy cards on the market but I focused on optimizing my card collection.
For optimization I intend:
- selling cards that I don't use in battle and that have a relatively low DEC conversion value
- purchase of cards that have a good conversion value in DEC.
Power/$ ratio
To choose which cards to sell I have selected:
- the cards I do not use in battle
- I calculated the Power/$ ratio for each card in my collection.
Power/$ = Conversion value in DEC / Lower selling price on the market.
The Power/$ ratio indicates the incremental value of the Power score for every $ spent in the purchase of a specific card.
The higher a card has a high Power/$ value, the more useful it will be in increasing the power score.
Similarly, the more a card has a low Power/$ value, the less useful it will be in increasing the power score.
So I sold a total of 22 cards that had a low Power/$ ratio.

I sold:
- 10 cards Frost Lion
- 10 Goblin Dartling cards
- 1 Bringhton Bloom card (Gold version)
- 1 Sand Worm card (Gold version)
As you can see from the following picture, the Power/$ ratio of the cards I sold was very low.

From the sale of the cards I got a total of 5.41$
Change Purchase Strategy
With the introduction of the Collection Power requirement my purchasing strategy has totally changed.
Before I used to buy cards considering only the usefulness of cards in battle.
Now my purchasing strategy must necessarily take in consideration three factors instead of one:
- the price on the market
- the value of conversion to DEC
- the utility in battle
Valuation of Splinterlands as an investment

Total Investment Cost
I Revenues
On Splinterlands the revenues are mainly two:
- the value of the Cards
- the value of tokens DEC (Dark Energy Crystal).
How much are my cards worth?
To calculate the dollar value of my cards I use Peakmonsters (https://peakmonsters.com/@libertycrypto27/collection).
The Collection section of the PeakMonsters website makes the calculation process much easier and faster.

To calculate the value of my card collection I take in consideration the total value using the Market Price.

How much are my DEC worth?
For each battle won you receive as a reward a certain amount of DEC.
The DEC tokens are the Non Fungible Tokens of the Splinterlands game.
Thanks to the battles won and the rewards obtained from the completion of the missions and thanks to the cards sold I have on my wallet a total of DEC of 22771.

To calculate the value in dollars I must first check the DEC value on Hive Engine (Highest Bid).
Today, September 26, 2020, the best bid for 1 DEC is 0.00416 HIVE.

Note that last month 1 DEC was worth 0.00295 HIVE while today it is worth 0.00416 HIVE.

ROI
( Return On Investment )

Final Considerations
In eleven months I made a profit of 149,437 $.
The ROI obtained is 57.68 %.
This month the profit increased a lot compared to the previous month.
In fact my profit after 10 months was 44,014 $, today, after 11 months, it is 149,437 $ and it is an increase of + 105,423 $ compared to the previous month.
Profit and ROI are much higher than the previous month.
The introduction of Collection Power has caused the discontent of many players but from the financial point of view has produced two positive changes in September:
- an average increase in the value of the cards
- an increase in the value of DEC
The trend of the ROI from the sixth month onwards is as follows:
- ROI after 6 months: 34.73 %
- ROI after 7 months: 77.02 %
- ROI after 8 months: 10.93 %
- ROI after 9 months: 34.33 %
- ROI after 10 months: 16.99 %
- ROI after 11 months: 57.68 %

The trend of the PROFIT from the sixth month onwards is as follows:
- PROFIT after 6 months: 27,992 $
- PROFIT after 7 months: 82,346 $
- PROFIT after 8 months: 24,214 $
- PROFIT after 9 months: 78,902 $
- PROFIT after 10 months: 44.014 $
- PROFIT after 10 months: 149.437 $

The profit in the eighth month fell because some players had offered for sale a large number of cards at very low prices and as a result there was a general decline in the value of many cards especially the Beta collection. My collection consists mostly of cards from the Beta collection.
In the ninth month the prices of the cards increased again and the value of my card collection also increased with the consequent increase of the ROI and Profit value.
In the tenth month my card collection increased its value but the cost incurred for the purchase of DICE packages was higher and therefore both ROI and Profit decreased by almost half compared to the ninth month.
In this month the changes introduced by the Power Collection have pushed many players to invest in the purchase of cards in order to increase their Power score and advance in the most advanced gaming leagues.
What will happen next month?

Posts and Contests
But Splinterlands is so much more!
Every week there are fun contests to participate in.
Depending on the quality of the posts, the @steemmonsters account rewards the authors with two upvote per week.
If you are a Splinterlands player my advice is to participate assiduously in the contests that @splinterlands organizes every week.
If I consider the upvotes that I received in 10 months from the @steemmonsters account are in strong profit and the ROI is much higher than 200%!
