Antonio is a boy, like any other, only he doesn't make a living in a socially well regarded job. He has a lot of dreams and a lot of love to give, even though he knows that maybe his lifestyle is going to take its toll on him quickly. He comes from a family of prostitutes and when he came into the world his mother looked down on him. She had fallen in love with a gringo who had promised to get her out of prostitution, something that only happens in the movies.
Antonio or Tony, as everyone called him, was destined to be a prostitute for a living. He knew it while his mother was taking him to his first client; he was only 12 years old and at that age he was initiated by a degenerate math teacher who paid for that service, even though he knew he was a minor. In that instant, he learned not to fight and to let himself be carried away by his destiny. Even though it will mean that something inside him will die forever: his innocence.
This is the main premise of "The Sons of Caín" a spectacular book I read some years ago. At that time I was going through many problems, so I immersed myself in reading to escape from my own reality. At that time I got my hands on a book that I don't have in physical form at the moment, but it meant a lot to me, for being an openly LGBTIQ+ story and for being set in Latin America.
Colombia is the specific place where this story was born, told from the streets of Bogota and with an interesting tone where the author gives us the details of everything that happens in the lives of the characters. Germán Ernesto Albornoz is the name of the writer who gave life to a book difficult to forget and with a lot to tell. This is not the author's first novel, in fact, he has another one titled "Sin lugar en este mundo" of which I hope to do a review very soon.
Antonio es un muchacho, como cualquier otro, solamente que no se gana la vida en un trabajo socialmente bien visto. Tiene muchos sueños y mucho amor para dar, a pesar de que sabe que tal vez su estilo de vida le va a pasar factura rápidamente. Viene de una familia de prostitutas y cuando vino al mundo su mamá lo miró con desprecio. Se había enamorado de un gringo que le había prometido sacarla de la prostitución, algo que solamente pasa en las películas.
Antonio o Tony, como todos lo llamaban, estaba destinado a ser un prostituto para ganarse la vida. Lo supo mientras su mamá lo llevaba al que iba a ser su primer cliente; tenía solo 12 años y a esa edad fue iniciado, por un degenerado profesor de matemáticas que pago por ese servicio, incluso a sabiendas de que era menor de edad. En ese instante, aprendió a no luchar y a dejarse llevar por su destino. Aunque eso significará, que algo dentro de él muriera para siempre: su inocencia.
Esta es la premisa principal de "Los hijos de Caín" un libro espectacular que leí hace algunos años. En aquella época estaba atravesando por muchos problemas, por lo que me sumergí en la lectura para escapar de mi propia realidad. En ese momento llegó a mis manos un libro que no tengo en físico en este momento, pero que significó mucho para mí, por ser una historia abiertamente LGBTIQ+ y por estar ambientada en Latinoamérica.
Colombia es el lugar específico dónde se gestó esta historia, contada desde las calles de Bogotá y con un tono interesante en dónde el autor nos va dando los detalles de todo lo que ocurre en la vida de los personajes. Germán Ernesto Albornoz es el nombre del escritor que le dio vida a un libro difícil de olvidar y con mucho por contar. Esta no es la primera novela del autor, de hecho, tiene otra titulada "Sin lugar en este mundo" de la que espero hacer una reseña muy pronto.
"It's because we are sons of Cain, all the whores, the fags and the sons of bitches we are no more, just that, the sons of Cain, the forgotten ones by God. —Tony with his sweet innocence answers: —The sons of Caín? I thought, and who was that, why were we his children, the truth is I don't know that man". Although in many aspects, this novel is very harsh in its content, it manages to perfectly introduce us to the world of male prostitution.
Tony's mother has always aspired to belong to the prostitution elite, but her time has passed. Now she sees in her son the opportunity to at least get close to that luxurious life that only a high society pimp can give him. Thus, before his coming of age, she takes her son to the house of Doña Rebeca, the villain of the novel, an elderly woman who provides prostitution services. To do so, she has two mansions provided for them.
"Venus" is the mansion of the women she prostituted, while in "Adonis" she did the same with the men. Adonis is where much of the plot of "The Sons of Cain" unfolds. There Tony meets his companions, Danilo, an effeminate boy who had escaped from the abuses of his family, Ricardo and Roberto, a pair of twins who were exiled from their homes due to their incestuous relationship, Michael who was the only heterosexual of the group, and Paulo.
Paulo became Tony's great love from the moment their eyes met. But, in that house interpersonal relationships between employees were not allowed, so they will keep the secret. For his part, Tony receives an initiation night and has to participate in an orgy to create a connection with his companions, but Oñate, Doña Rebeca's evil right-hand man, also rapes the new boys inside the house, without exception.
A series of events begin to happen in the lives of all the characters, who together will live all kinds of experiences at the hands of many clients, from different origins and with incredible stories that will portray the reality of those who offer the service of prostitution and those who receive it. Antonio will also live his love story with Paulo, but many things will have to happen in the meantime for them to be together.
"Es porque somos los hijos de Caín, todas las putas, los maricas y los hijos de puta no somos más, solo eso, los hijos de Caín, los olvidados por Dios. —le dice su abuela consternada y Tony con su dulce inocencia contesta: —¿Los hijos de Caín?, pensé y ese quién era, ¿por qué éramos hijos de él?, la verdad no conozco a ese señor". Aunque en muchos aspectos, esta novela es muy dura por el contenido que trata logra adentrarnos al mundo de la prostitución masculina perfectamente.
La madre de Tony, siempre ha aspirado por pertenecer a la elite de la prostitución, pero su tiempo ha pasado. Ahora ve en su hijo la oportunidad de al menos acercarse a esa vida llena de lujos, que únicamente puede darle una proxeneta de la alta sociedad. Es así como antes de cumplir la mayoría de edad, lleva a su hijo a la casa de Doña Rebeca, la villana de la novela, una mujer mayor que presta servicios de prostitución. Para hacerlo, tiene dos mansiones provistas para ellos.
“Venus” es la mansión de las mujeres que prostituía, mientras que en “Adonis” hacia lo mismo con los hombres. En Adonis, es donde se desarrolla gran parte del argumento de "Los hijos de Caín". Allí Tony conoce a sus compañeros, Danilo, un chico afeminado que había escapado de los abusos de su familia, Ricardo y Roberto, un par de gemelos que fueron exiliados de sus hogares debido a la relación incestuosa que mantenían, Michael quien era el único heterosexual del grupo y Paulo.
Paulo, se convierte en el gran amor de Tony desde el momento en que sus ojos se cruzaron. Pero, en aquella casa no se permitían las relaciones interpersonales entre los empleados, por lo que mantendrán el secreto. Por su parte, Tony recibe una noche de iniciación y tiene que participar en una orgía para crear conexión con sus compañeros, pero Oñate, el malvado mano derecha de Doña Rebeca, también viola a los chicos nuevos dentro de la casa, sin excepción.
Una serie de eventos comienzan a pasar en la vida de todos los personajes, que en conjunto vivirán todo tipo de experiencias de la mano de muchos clientes, de orígenes distintos y con historias increíbles que retrataran la realidad de los que ofrecen el servicio de la prostitución y de los que la reciben. Antonio también vivirá su historia de amor con Paulo, pero muchas cosas tendrán que suceder mientras para que puedan estar juntos.
I certainly didn't want to do too many spoilers, because for those interested in reading this story I will be sharing the digital edition of this novel, so let me know in the comments if you are interested. But, what I will tell you is that it is one of my favorite books and not only because it is an LGBTIQ+ novel, but also because of its stories, because of its struggles, because of everything that each of the characters have to go through.
Honestly, I was able to reflect a lot, because it is true that many times we judge without knowing the suffering that is implicit in the so-called oldest job in the world. It is an enjoyable, human story, wonderfully well written, that leaves nothing to the imagination, everything is told, everything is said. Its characters have closure and their stories go hand in hand with those of the protagonist. Without a doubt, it is a book that I fervently recommend you to read.

Sinceramente, pude reflexionar mucho, porque sí que es cierto que muchas veces juzgamos sin saber el sufrimiento que lleva implícito el llamado trabajo más antiguo del mundo. Es una historia amena, humana, maravillosamente bien escrita, que no deja nada a la imaginación, todo lo cuenta, todo lo dice. Sus personajes tienen cierres y sus historias van en compas con las del protagonista. Sin duda es un libro que, fervientemente, les recomiendo leer.
