Adventures in Pet Sitting - Unintended Consequences

I'm guessing y'all think you know what
the object in the first picture is.

Maybe so, maybe no.

You probably call it a screwdriver. Or possibly a flat-head, being more specific. You can use it for that purpose. But, in this case, sorry... it has an entirely different function.

To properly explain, I need to backtrack a bit and start here.

This routine started on a stormy day when I was attempting to distract Ginger from the scary thunder and lightening outside her house.

That is a cow leg bone. She has several. This is the smallest.

They generally come already stuffed with the original marrow or some other goodie like peanut butter. She makes pretty short work of those fillings. I try to give her a little more of a challenge. I use a plain chicken jerky and break off pieces to fit the hollow. Four or five stacked up is a snug fit and the goal is to get them as far down in the cavity as they'll go...
ideally, all the way to the bottom. That guarantees she'll be busy with it for a good, long time.

Works like a charm, too. She gets so intent on it, that the rumbles and flashes are more in the background than imminent threat. This is now a regular part of our visits and I get a 'talking to' if I'm slow getting it ready.

The unintended consequences I discovered later on. That was when 'Papa' told me about the night time part of this routine. It seems that when Ginger can't get to the treats in the very bottom of the bone, she trots it over to Papa and either drops it on his foot or (brace yourselves guys) in his 'lap'. She insists he help her in getting every last crumb out of the hollow.

She knows he has a 'treat extractor' to reach those problem spots!

Clever girl and resourceful Papa!
