One of the joys of walking the dogs at this time of year is coming across one of Britain's more beautiful flowers, the Early-purple orchid (Orchis mascula)
It lies dotted along the field margin like bright little purple sticks of candy.
I've never bent down to smell them but apparently they have a sweet smell initially but then turn into a rank scent reminiscent of tomcat urine!
Despite the unpleasant smell they are, for me, a harbinger of spring and warmer weather to come and for that will always be a firm favourite of mine.
