"Evergreen State should look to the cratering enrollment at the University of Missouri over the last couple of years following its similarly violent 'inmates running the asylum' protests. This is its future." (Tom Knighton) |
Olympia's Evergreen State College's student insurrection continues to make news, but things do seem to be winding down - and, as Tom Knighton points out, the college may lose state funding due to their failure to meet enrollment guidelines. Like Mizzou, Evergreen is learning a hard lesson: Parents don't want their children exposed to Marxist indoctrination and racist violence.
There won't be many tears shed by Washington parents if access to the public teat is cut off. Hell, that would be poetic justice, would it not?
In "Students Spoiled Stupid", we learn that Harvard's snowflakes not only want puppies and coloring books, but also release from any and all responsibility for failing to...er...return library books on time. Yep, that's how Harvard teaches civic responsibility these days.
You're in for a treat for reading Nathan Rubbelke's excellent coverage of a hate crime hoax at St. Olaf's. After a student claimed to have discovered a racist note, the campus leftists sprung into action - a process which folded in all the generic Marxist rabble-rousing, the administration reacted, talks ensued...and then the hoax was discovered. And, in spite of this, the appeasement of leftist thugs by the administration continued! Go figger.
Last but not least, Peter Wood details how campus feminists dealt with dissent on the Springfield College campus. Yes, it's "Double Secret Probation" time at Springfield!

Evergreen College Prez Learns All About Appeasement
Let this register: A professor who did nothing other than object to a race-based, coercive policy can’t return to a college campus for fear of being injured by students.
What’s worse is that his pusillanimous colleagues and supervisors in the administration have sided with the thugs. At his “meeting” with them, these punk bullies shouted and cursed at the President of Evergreen State, George Bridges. They mocked and insulted him, calling Bridges by his first name: “F**k YOU GEORGE, we don’t wanna listen to a GODDAMN thing you have to say! No, you shut the f**k up!”
But Evergreen faces a deeper, and more long-term threat. It is the only state four-year higher education institution to see enrollment drop steeply since 2011 despite wide-open admission standards. At about 4,080 students, it is about 300 students short of the Legislature’s funded enrollment target.
The two problems are now entwined. Evergreen President George Bridges and his administration need to assure future students and their parents that academics come first -- and not acquiesce to the 200-or-so student protesters at the expense of the 4,000-student campus. Without safety, there’s no learning, and without learning, Evergreen will wither into irrelevance.
Beyond safe spaces, Harvard students want protection from the natural consequences from not returning library books on time. In response to the high stress these bright students experience from late fees, Harvard University Library has announced there are no longer late fees for students. Does shielding students from natural consequences prepare them for life? Only an irresponsible life! These students don’t just want safe spaces; they want protection from their own choices. These fragile students seem incapable of handling the freedoms they demonstrate for.
America needs to wake up to the fact that we are graduating far too many students who are not prepared to succeed. And we’re not doing them a favor by giving them easy money that is hard to repay.
The furor at St. Olaf College is a microcosm of a formula that has played out at many U.S. higher education institutions in recent years. A racist incident—sometimes a hoax, other times not—drives self-described marginalized students into a fevered pitch, demanding action.
It started with the infamous Yale University and University of Missouri demonstrations in fall 2015 by Black Lives Matter protesters, efforts that prompted administrators at both schools to resign. Different iterations of that activist movement continue, largely because it works. Once people lodge complaints of institutional racism, administrations often cave to student demands, providing everything from segregated spaces to promises of hiring more faculty of color.
He was accused of denying “the Department Chairperson” admittance to his classroom.(Actually she arrived uninvited and walked out). He was accused of refusing to meet with the dean herself. (Actually he said yes, but wanted to bring a witness, which she refused to allow.) And he was accused of failing to provide a doctor’s note to verify an illness that prevented him from attending a meeting. (Gouws dutifully provided the doctor’s note.)
I repeat the petty details just to capture their sheer pettiness. This is what academic deans do? Well, this is what academic deans do when faced with a renegade professor who keeps trying to slip “men in literature” into his English courses.
