Castle-like Fort Built by the Spanish and Dutch
Last week I visited the museum area of Fort San Domingo in Tamsui, Taipei. The site features a fort that was originally built by the Spanish conquistadores. The Spanish fort was eventually razed and later when the Dutch drove the Spanish troops out, erected a new fort in its place.
The locals called the Dutch "the red-haired people" which led to the name 紅毛城 which literally means, fort of the red-haired.
The Chinese had control of the the fort from 1683 to 1867, until the British took it over in 1868 and turned it into their trade consulate.
