Lion's bas-relief in Lucerne

I was struck by this high relief, located on a very steep rocky ledge behind a beautiful pond, which is located in the heart of the city Lucerne. Long stood near this 9-meter sculpture, cut straight in the rock in a 13-meter niche.

Until now, I can not forget this "dying lion", resting on a shield with a picture of a lily. On the face of a noble animal, the famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen depicted almost human suffering.

Above the bas-relief you can see the inscription in Latin: HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI
"Fidelity and courage of the Swiss." And the numbers 760 and 350, correspond to the number of fallen and surviving warriors. At the foot, right in the rock, are carved the names of soldiers and officers who gave their lives for their Motherland.
