The wise sloth writes about Steemit

I just found this blog posted yesterday that gives a pretty good introduction to what Steemit is. The blog belongs to @thewisesloth, but they haven't re-posted it on Steemit.

I agree with a lot of the blog post, such as "In order for STEEM to skyrocket in value, the site needs to attract millions of more users". Ned has says they welcome the problems that millions of users will bring, but the site doesn't seem quite ready for them yet.

The sloth raises a few issues that I'd like to respond to:

  • Make formatting posts easier: There is a WYSIWYG editor here already. I tend to use Markdown as I'm used to it.
  • Put all the features on one page: I think he's referring to all the external tools. I think some of these should be integrated. I even suggested having a sort of app store that would allow us to pay for add-ons we like. He says you need lots of accounts with different services. I guess you do need accounts for some add-ons, but most are not really essential.
  • Allow users to subscribe to tags or tribes: Following tags would be cool, but this may be part of the promised communities feature. It was supposed to be available in Q2, so that should mean this month.
  • Give users a customizable home page: I know some people would love this. I just hope it's not as garish as MySpace was.
  • Make sharing other people’s content easier: Well we have 're-steem'. I'd prefer a sharing method where you can add some details of why you are sharing.
  • Put higher rewards on sharing and commenting: Some sort of reward for making people aware of a post would be good. It's a form of curation. You can earn from commenting as long as people vote up the comments.
  • Reward people for attracting new dolphins: A referral reward would result in more users, but the sign-up issues needs to be resolved first. If there was a reward then I think it should be based on what the new user makes.
  • Eliminate dependency on whales: Whales have been less of a factor recently, but they can still choose to really swing the rewards for a post. There has to be a balance as we don't want people gaming the system. The requirement to have lots of SP to give big rewards makes that harder.
  • Give away more money: I would like to see more distribution of Steem across more accounts, but it has to be done carefully to avoid devaluing it. Ned has says that the main Steemit account will get powered down. It's been funding the SP that is delegated to new users and they also pay some developers. I hope to see this continue.

I hope you will read the blog and give your own opinions here or in your own post. The sloth has some other posts related to Steemit. Keep the discussion going.

Steem on!
