Eloim walked into his room and opened his coffin lid. Sitting down on the floor, he took out his mobile phone and switched it on. As the screen came up, he saw he had one missed call from Karla and a voice message; quickly he pressed the button to listen to it.
“Eloim, hi. Spain is wicked; you’d love it down here. We just got in from the craziest Halloween celebration. You wouldn’t believe the party the humans down here throw for it.” Karla’s excited voice said. “We’ve met up with some local vampires too; we’ve promised next year we’ll bring you down with us. They’re all real excited to meet you. Anyway go to go, the party isn’t over yet. We brought a few new friends back to the house we’re using and keeping this party going till noon. Right bye, oh I hope you found Lynne, she’s a bit strange but really knows her stuff.”
Eloim ended the message with a sigh and put the phone back in his pocket. Suddenly he was very homesick and he missed his family. With another sigh he climbed into the coffin and pulled down the lid.
Lynne stood in the centre of her bedroom, her guests had settled down for the daylight hours. Her room was much like any other room of a successful single woman, with furniture such as a dressing table and wardrobes. The main difference was, instead of a bed, there was an ornate coffin. The house had been built in Victorian times and Lynne had bought it new, living there ever since. Over the years, she had kept most of the original features, including the fireplace in the bedroom. Not needing the heat and not wanting the dirt of an open fire, a large mirror and candles arranged on the hearth before it shielded it from view.
Kneeling down before the mirror, she lit the candles and quickly mumbled an incantation. Then she sat back as a face appeared in the mirror.
“Do you have news for her Empress?” The face asked in a cold, gravelly voice.
“I can give you the vampire. He arrived here a few hours ago. Is your mistress willing to trade in return for the crystal of Uruk.”
“He is with you now?” The face asked eagerly.
“He sleeps away the morning in the next room, safe within my care. You get the vampire in exchange for the crystal and we all walk away as friends.”
“The Empress has agreed these terms and your request to meet on neutral ground on the plains before the first circle. We shall leave you to set up the travel arrangements. I trust you have the ability to use the spells we have provided for you?” The face asked, barely hiding the contempt in his voice.
“I had the ability to trap you in my mirror demon, so a little travel spell is well within my power,” Lynne said, ignoring the demon’s attitude. “Tell your mistress to get herself ready, I will begin conducting the spell at once.”
With a wave of her hand, she dismissed the mirror demon and only then did she smile. With the crystal of Uruk, she would finally have the power to stand up to the Vampire Priest and the Council of Elders. No longer would she have to fear anybody.
Oliver lay on the settee in the living room unable to sleep; the thing was far too soft for him, so he got up and moved to lie down on a fur rug before the fireplace. From upstairs in the room above, he heard someone moving around. The noise was faint but his hearing was far better than any human’s. He became aware of a woman’s voice coming from the fireplace and quickly worked out that the sound was travelling down the chimney from Lynne’s room upstairs. Cocking his head to one side, he leaned closer to the fireplace to listen into whoever Lynne was talking to. He had been certain that Lynne had no one else staying. As soon as he heard a male voice answer Lynne, he struggled to prevent a growl escaping his throat. Even at his young age he knew the voice of a demon when he heard one. Not daring to breathe, he listened to the rest of the conversation.
Even after it finished, he stayed still, not daring to move. He waited until he heard Lynne open the door to her room and walk out before he finally sat back. It was now the daylight hours and Eloim would be asleep within his coffin, not knowing that he had been betrayed. Quickly Oliver looked around the room looking for a weapon; the ones they had brought with them were still in the van. He had never faced a vampire before and he felt fear rising within him. Lynne was a good few hundred years old so she would be far stronger and faster than him. Also, she was a witch. He could smell the stench of magic on her and it lingered all around the house. Moving silently through to the kitchen, he headed for the cutlery drawer. He hoped to find an assortment of sharp knives but discovered only a small spoon. Moving on, he began to open cupboards, all of which were empty. The entire expensive kitchen area was bare of anything he could use.
“Not even a bloody frying pan?” Oliver grumbled, opening the final cupboard. “Bloody vampires and their liquid diets, why couldn’t she have at least bought some stuff to pretend she cooked in here?”
Moving to a door in the kitchen, he opened it and paused. It was a large walk in pantry, also empty of anything of any use. The only thing in there was a naked man who hung by his arms from the ceiling. As the man saw Oliver, he began to thrash about, muffled noises coming from his gagged mouth. Oliver quickly closed the door which cut out the sounds of Lynne’s prisoner. He decided that a vampire would only keep a human chained up in a room for one of two reasons. The first reason, and more probable as he was in the kitchen, was food and he wasn’t going to consider the second. He had spent over five minutes silently checking the kitchen for something to use as a weapon and found nothing. He knew if he was going to rescue Eloim, he would have to do it bare handed.
Moving back out of the kitchen, Oliver headed for the bottom of the stairs. As he got there, he heard a faint mumbling from upstairs. He paused on the bottom step and turned his head to look at the door. It would be so easy to leave, to go and get some help. With a shake of his head he dismissed the thought. By the time he got back, Eloim would be in the demon’s hands. Taking a deep breath, he took a step forward and then with a snarl, began to run up the steps.
Oliver burst through the door, a snarl escaping from his mouth as he saw Eloim’s coffin in the centre of a pentagram, black candles burning at each of its points. Lynne looked up from reading a large leather bound book and with a dismissive wave of her hand, Oliver felt himself fly backwards to crash into the wall.
“Too late dog,” she snarled. “Your friend is off to face his demon and you cannot stop it.”
“What have you done to me?” Oliver said, unable to make his limbs work.
“Just a simple spell, it removes your ability to control your body,” Lynne said with a smile as she returned her attention to the book.
“Well that explains why I’ve just peed on your carpet then, not had an accident like that since I was a pup,” Oliver said in embarrassment. Lynne froze, her wrist held over a golden bowl, a small knife held inches away from making the blood sacrifice that was needed in order to complete the spell. She paused as Oliver’s words sank in and the horror of her house being defiled began to engulf her. With a scream of rage, she half turned on Oliver, her fury plain to see. Oliver felt the control of his body return and began to change form as he sprang towards Lynne, his fingers already growing claws.
Lynne’s vampire reactions saved her as she moved out of the way, placing one foot into the pentagram. Oliver landed lightly and spun around, his face elongating and a snarl escaping his throat as Lynne crouched down with her own fangs prominent and she hissed at the young werewolf.
The lines of the pentagram burst into flame and Lynne looked down to see blood dripping from a cut on her arm where Oliver had caught her a glancing blow with his razor sharp claws.
“No! The spell is not complete!” She cried in sudden terror, her blood flow increasing as it was sucked from her body to feed the circle. Lynne’s scream was suddenly cut off as she disappeared in a flash of light.
Oliver reversed his change and stood up, looking at the empty pentagram. Eloim and his coffin were also gone.
“Oh bugger,” Oliver cursed. “This is so not good.” He walked out of the room trying not to panic; he needed to work out what to do. Sitting on the top stair, he pulled his phone out of his pocket and quickly made a call. He got directed to voice mail. “Karla, things have gone really wrong here. Your friend Lynne has kind of given Eloim to the demons and I think I accidently killed her. Not positive on that one but she looked to be losing a lot of blood when she disappeared. Give us a ring when you get this.”
