HEAVEN #23: Tea Ceremony with Sen Soshu

A Japanese Tea Ceremony by Sen Soshu

If you like Green Tea you might be aware of the Japanese Tea Tradition. For centuries some famous families have preserved this tradition for us and I was very fortunate to be invited to a Chakai by Sen Shoshu the Iemoto of Mushakōjisenke Tea School. Sen Shosu is the 14th generation of his family to teach the way of tea.

Mushakōjisenke sometimes referred to as Mushanokōjisenke, is a school of Japanese tea ceremony. Along with Urasenke and Omotesenke, the Mushakōjisenke is one of the three lines of the Sen family descending from Sen Rikyū, which together are known as the san-Senke or "three Sen houses/families". The head or iemoto of this line carries the hereditary name Sōshu SOURCE

I was told that it is harder to get a Tea Ceremony appointment with him than getting a table at Restaurant NOMA which receives 100.000 reservation request per month.

Our group waiting for Sen Soshu

Everybody is sitting on the Tatami

Waiting for Sen Shoshu Sensai

The tea-cup looks beautiful and tastes fantastic

Everybody will receive a little table for the presentation of a cup of tea and a little Japanese Wagashi (Japanese Sweets)

The experience was out of this world

I have been to tea-ceremonies before but it is different if the ceremony is held by a direct descendant of the most famous Tea-Meisters in Japanese History. I was honored to be allowed to join this very exclusive circle. I could not take more pictures as it is considered rude during the ceremony. But I hope you can imagine how huge this was for me...

Even the POPE was here....

Have you been to a Tea-Ceremony before???
