Earlier today, I received a phone call and while I was talking I was gazing out the back door into the garden. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day and my eye was drawn to the back corner and a shrub that is usually, fairly drab and unexciting. Today, however, the sunlight was shining through the branches highlighting one of the red leaves which made it appear as if it were glowing.
This reminded me of the colours you see in Autumn leaves but since I'm in Australia and we've just entered spring, it seemed a little out of place. So, I'm guessing that the burst of colour is related to new growth rather than the seasonal loss of leaves that you would expect in autumn. Whatever the reason, it gave the garden a vibrant splash of colour in an otherwise boring corner.
As soon as I got off the phone, I grabbed my camera and tried to take the photograph that I had pictured in my mind but once I got up close, my plans changed because the shrub, as a whole, wasn't as pretty as I had thought. My solution was to zoom in much closer and focus on each of the flower sprays; this also helped me crop out the busy background.
Lately, I've been experimenting with various 'aperture' settings to adjust the depth of field for different situations and I must say, learning how to use this setting alone, has greatly improved my photography skills particularly in regards to framing my subject.
Finding any information on this tree was difficult because I had no idea where to start, however, I was able to source the following information from Bunnings Warehouse (NOT an affiliate link)
Botanical Name: Photinia Robusta fraseri
Common Name: Red Leaf Photinia
Description: A tall, evergreen shrub with dainty white flowers, glossy dark green foliage with attractive coppery-red new growth.
I hope you enjoy my photography.
