I will be brief for this update because it's 11:19 pm and I have to start my shift work in 11 minutes for the World Cup. I work for a TV broadcast company and need to monitor our apps that are streaming the live event.
A new witness server
After losing witness votes from two Orcas and two Dolphins, I dropped 10 ranks in a matter of few hours. This has, as an effect, also dropped my production of blocks from 2 to only one every 24 hours. This also means I will not be earning enough SP to pay for the server rental fees. So I decided to look around and see if there are better offers out there until I can afford a better spec. Thanks to @evildido, a French witness, I've found Scaleway which are offering very competitive prices. I was tempted to take the challenge of running a witness node on a server with only 8 GB of RAM but the issue was the disk space that comes with the package was too low and wasn't viable. So I chose their C2L package that is a Baremetal 8 x86-64 CPUs, 32 GB RAM, 1x 50 GB network SSD + 1x 250 GB Direct SSD and 800 Mbits/s network.
My previous witness server was on So You Start with the same amount of RAM but with 2x 240 GB SSD mounted in RAID 0. Their SSD was much faster than the one on Scaleway but that only affects replay time.
I've been running the new witness server for several days now and it is running just fine as you can see on my block production report on SteemDB:
https://steemdb.com/@quochuy/blocks
The difference now is that I'm spending about 50% less than before. That is much more sustainable.
A seed node
I've decided that with the money I've saved, I would help the Steem blockchain even more by setting up a seed node. Seed nodes are running the exact same software as a witness server but it does not generate blocks but it receives and broadcast blocks to allow other witnesses to sync their local copy of the Steem blockchain. Having more seed nodes is better as it helps witnesses servers to sync faster.
My seed server is hosted at: seed01.steemulant.com:2001
That's it for now.
Summary of some of my other contributions
Project | Description | Link |
---|---|---|
Steemed Phish | Chrome browser extension to make external links more visible and alert you on Phishing/Scamming links | Steemed Phish |
Dtube Community Support | This project by @evildido allows users to run their own IPFS node and pin videos in order to cache them for longer. Dtube has the tendency of deleting non-popular video after few days only. I helped Dockerizing the project for an easier deployment on almost any platform. I've also contributed by running two nodes, one in Australia and one in Canada to cache #teamaustralia and #teamnz videos. | Dockerizing Dtube Community Support |
DiscoSteem Bot | This is a Discord/Steem bot project by @planetenamek. When I started Steemulant Bot for the Vietnamese community, I didn't know the existence of DiscoSteem Bot and wanted something written in NodeJS. I've ended up continuing my own project as it contains code and logic for personal use and for the Vietnamese community. But I've decided to share some useful features that can benefit the users of DiscoSteem Bot and will continue to add more functionalities as I go. | Dockerizing DiscoSteem Bot |
A Dollar A Day | This is a project run by @pennsif and will donate 15 SBD every day to a charity | "A dollar a day" fundraiser - Karaoke Singing: Le chanteur malheureux |
