ULOG 063 - Working on a new Chrome extension to help with blogging on Steemit

This week, I've been working on a small Chrome browser extension to help with a repetitive task I have to do every day when ulogging: copy/pasting and updating my blog footer. The posts I create on the Steem blockchain now always contains a footer where I add:

  • links to previous posts
  • communities I'm a member of
  • credits
  • Steem security tips

I usually keep the text of that footer in Simplenote an app to take notes with Markdown support. But everytime, I need to open it, copy and paste it into the editor and then go find my recent posts and copy and paste the title and URL. I don't like repetitive manual tasks, so being a developer, I thought I'd create something to help me automate this a little bit.

As you can see, I can create up to 5 different templates, I currently have:

  • one template for my ULOG posts
  • one template for my witness update posts
  • one template for comment signatures

In the template you can see the text: {{ RELATED_CONTENT} }} this is where the automation comes in. As I click on the Find posts button, the extension will check the blockchain for my most recent blog posts and will display them in a selectable list.

I can then tick the checkboxes for each post I want to include in the footer. A click on the Inject into Steemit editor will copy the template, replace {{ RELATED_CONTENT} }} with a bullet point list of posts I have selected and paste that into the Steemit post or comment editor.

This saves me a little bit of time every day. I will release this extension soon, there are still few enhancements to be done.

Vote for my witness
On Steem, Witnesses are playing the important role of providing a performant and safe network for all of us. You have the power to choose 30 trusty witnesses to package transactions and sign the blocks that will go in the Steem blockchain. Vote for me via SteemConnect to help me do more useful projects for the communities.

Password and Private Keys security

You all know that your Steem password is the access to all your STEEM, SBD, posting, transferring, everything... right?
So, please, follow these simple steps and keep yourself safe:

  1. Apart from the initial setup of your account, NEVER use your password ANYWHERE, if stolen, it will give full control to your Steem account.
  2. Backup your password and keep it somewhere safe. Use a password manager like Lastpass, print it on paper and put it in a safe (no kidding). If you forget your password, no one can help you out.
  3. To login for creating content and curating, use your Private Posting Key
  4. To make transfers and account operations, use your Private Active Key
  5. To encrypt and decrypt memos, use your Private Memo Key
