Sobredosis [ENG

Last night, I didn't know it but it was my last night. I bought the cocaine from the same dealer, at the same time and at the same place, I am not a fortune teller to guess that the powder I have been using almost my entire adult life, had been adulterated with opioids. Opioids themselves are not bad, in fact they help relieve pain in people with serious conditions.

But in large quantities they can be deadly, how would I know there was a war going on between cocaine dealers, how would I know I would die in an emergency room, not knowing what was wrong with me? Not even the doctors could do anything for me. I was not the only one, the hospital was full of people with the same symptoms.

Some lay on the floor, others had sudden convulsions, others moaned as they were carried on the stretcher. The ambulance woke up the spasms that shook my body tirelessly, I would like to think that I would get out of the ER alive, but that was unlikely and the worst thing is that I couldn't even feel pain.

La última noche, no lo sabía pero era mi última noche. Compré la cocaína al mismo dealer, a la misma hora y en el mismo lugar, no soy adivino para adivinar que el polvo que he estado consumiendo casi la totalidad de mi vida adulta, había sido adulterado con opioides. Ni siquiera los médicos podían hacer algo por mí. No era el único, el hospital estaba lleno de personas con los mismos síntomas.

Algunos yacían en el piso, otros tenían convulsiones repentinas, otros se quejaban mientras eran llevados en la camilla. La ambulancia despertaba los espasmos que sacudían mi cuerpo incansablemente, me gustaría pensar que saldría vivo de urgencias, pero eso era improbable y lo peor es que ni siquiera podía sentir dolor.

When you overdose on opioids, you lose consciousness, your breathing starts to speed up, your body goes into constant spasms and convulsions. I could only hold on to my mother's hand, there were no friends, girlfriend or dealer. Marcelo was a good kid from the Calle 8 neighborhood.

He had been my dealer from the beginning, that particular night I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. I just noticed that extravagant haircut that made me think that maybe he should look a little less obvious, maybe a guy with glasses and a more common appearance would stay off the police radar.

Many victims were arriving dead at the ER, I could only pray to God to save me this time, not so much for me but for my mother. When you are in trouble, you are more aware of the consequences of your actions, you promise not to do it again, but when addictions control you they also decide for you.

Cuando sufres una sobredosis de opioides, pierdes la conciencia, la respiración comienza a acelerarse, tu cuerpo sufre constantes espasmos y convulsiones. Yo solo podía aferrarme a la mano de mi madre, allí no estaban mis amigos, mi novia o el dealer. Marcelo era un buen pibe del barrio Calle 8.

Había sido mi dealer desde el principio, esa noche en particular no noté nada fuera de lo común. Solo noté ese corte extravagante de cabello que me hizo pensar que quizás debería verse un poco menos evidente, quizás un chico con lentes y con una apariencia más común, se alejaría de los radares de la policía.

Muchas víctimas llegaban muertas a urgencias, yo solo podía pedir a Dios que me salvara en esta oportunidad, no tanto por mí sino por mi madre. Cuando estas en problemas, eres más consciente de las consecuencias de tus actos, prometes no volverlo a hacer, pero cuando las adicciones te controlan también deciden por ti.

My mother clung to my hand, until a doctor injected a substance that had a rapid effect on my body, the convulsions stopped and the spasms subsided into a rhythm. My breathing slowed and my heart rested. Consciousness was returning to me, I discovered myself surrounded by apparatus, next to me a man who was fighting for his life, but in an instant he suffered a respiratory arrest.

The screams pulled me out of my own abyss, death had arrived, the last night was for that man, the last night I had survived, the last night had been fatal, the last night was another chance. We would not know the truth of what happened until several weeks later, many people were unlucky, some died and others like me managed to recover.

Others continue smoking joints, consuming cocaine, for me it was an important warning, I wanted to continue living, I wanted to be a better son for my mother, I needed a radical change in my lifestyle. I didn't know when my last night would be, but it surely wouldn't be another overdose.

Mi mama se aferraba a mi mano, hasta que un médico inyecto una sustancia que surtió un efecto rápido en mi cuerpo, las convulsiones se detuvieron y los espasmos se diluyeron a su ritmo. Mi respiración bajo la frecuencia y mi corazón descansaba. La consciencia fue volviendo a mí, me descubrí rodeado de aparatos, junto a mí un hombre que luchaba por su vida, pero en un instante sufrió un paro respiratorio.

Los gritos me sacaron de mi propio abismo, la muerte había llegado, la última noche era para ese hombre, la última noche yo había sobrevivido, la última noche había sido fatal, la última noche era otra oportunidad. No sabríamos la verdad de lo acontecido hasta varias semanas después, muchas personas no tuvieron suerte unos murieron y otros como yo lograron reponerse.

Otros continúan fumando porros, consumiendo cocaína, para mí fue un aviso importante, quería seguir viviendo, quería ser un mejor hijo para mi madre, necesitaba un cambio radical en mi estilo de vida. No sabía cuándo seria mi última noche, pero seguramente no sería por otra sobredosis.
