My only defence was to write down every word they said.

"Can you say that again," I said. "My handwriting is dreadful, and it takes ages for me to write things down, these days."

They looked at me. They were ugly looking bastards. One of them - the tall one - had a scar that ran down his face, it looked as though someone was so offended by his ugliness they had tried to cut it off him. The other - the short fat one - was the talker. It was he who spoke now.

"Listen here, wise guy," he said.

I laughed.

"Wise guy?" I said. "You sound like you've stepped out of some terrible film about the mafia."

Shorty stared at me.

"I am the fucking mafia," he said. "And I like those films about us."

"Right," I said, making a note of what he said.

"Look," he said, stepping closer to me. I could smell his breath. His lunch must have been pretty awful. "Look, wise guy, enough of the writing. More of the talking..."

...

"Eloise was my half-sister, but everyone thought she was my cousin," I said.

Shorty looked confused.

"Who the fuck is Eloise," he said.

I sighed.

"Keep up," I said. "She's my half-sister. Or was. Until one of your lot shot her in the head."

Shorty looked at Scarface.

"Do you know an Eloise?" he said. Scarface looked blank, and shrugged. "We don't know no Eloise," Shorty said. "Can you just tell us where the fucking money is."

I put my pen down. I didn't think that writing things down was going to save me the kicking (or worse) I thought I was going to get. It was a stupid defence. I should have learned karate.

Or at the very least, yoga.

"Look," I tried to look as hard as I could - which seeing as I was dressed only in my underpants, grey and ripped as they were, was pretty difficult - and started again. "All I know is Eloise had the money, and one of your goons shot her in the head. And then the money disappeared. Perhaps," I said...

...

"The last time they saw a movie - last Thursday I think - they plotted to take the money together. But then your goon, thought he would take if for himself, and set me up."

Shorty scratched his head and looked from me to Scarface and back again. "I have no idea what you are talking about," he said, a pained expression on his face. "And you are starting to get on my nerves. Robert," he said to Scarface. "Shoot the asshole."

I panicked.

"Please," I said. "Don't shoot me in the asshole. I don't know where the money is. All I know is that Eloise was meeting a guy from your outfit, and they were going to watch a re run of a movie - Scarface, I think it was," I looked Shorty in the eye. "I think his name was Robert."

Shorty looked at Scarface, and his face changed.

"Hey, you got something to say, Bob?"

Scarface looked blank and shrugged his shoulders...

...

There is no defence for this.. it was just what poured out of my head!

Some HUGE news for me!

Another one of my steemit stories has been selected to appear in the Isle of Write Anthology!

output_5wZM1p.gif

“Haunted” is a ghost story (not that the title gave that away or anything) and it currently has 7 parts to it. But it isn’t finished yet. So I had better get on with it, hadn’t I…

It joins my 8 part story “Reunion” that was selected a few weeks ago.

Please support @isleofwrite by visiting their page and checking out their post, they are doing a great job of highlighting good writing, so if you like reading you should really check them out.

You too can be curated and find your story in an @isleofwrite anthology : read the post and find out how!
