Another day, another episode of How to Remember Names - your daily advice to improve your social skills with memory. Our guest of honor today is Mark Ruffalo aka the Hulk. Let's go!
For my German friends: Ich nehme an ihr könnt alle Englisch lesen. Von daher habe ich für euch lediglich ein paar Anmerkungen zugefügt, die speziell für Deutsche gedacht sind. Ansonsten gilt natürlich das gleiche Prinzip wie in Englisch.
The Person
Usually we would analyze the face or the body of the person we want to remember and use a unique feature as an anchor point for the keywords we come up with for first and family name. In this example though we can rely on Mark being famous for playing the rage monster Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That is very memorable.
Mark
A very easy name which could mean many things. I decided to go for this: X marks the spot on the treisure map. So our keyword becomes the map and maybe the theme of looking for treisure but that is optional.
For Germans: Das mit Schatzkarte funktioniert im deutschen auch, aber nicht ganz so gut. Im deutschen kann man Markierung sagen. Aber da gibt es dann auch bessere Wörter, zum Beispiel Mark wie Tomatenmark. Natürlich könnt ihr auch die Englischen Begriffe verwenden, sofern ihr wisst was sie bedeuten.
Ruffalo
His family name made me think. The words I came up with were "rough", "roof", "raver". I didn't like any of that. And then it made click: Ruffalo sounds like buffalo. So, buffalo it is. It doesn't start with the same letter, which makes a bit more tricky to decode later. But the phonetic is sooooo close that we shouldn't worry about that. Our brain will connect the dots for us.
For Germans: Also Büffel ist jetzt keine so tolle Eselsbrücke für Ruffalo. Von daher solltet ihr eher etwas nehmen was bei uns ähnlich klingt. Zum Beispiel Raffaello, diese weißen Schokokugeln mit Kokussplittern. Oder Rüffel, also im Sinne von schmipfen.
