It was fifteen to one when it all started. I had been driving on the interstate highway since very early in the morning and the traffic was fast, I urgently needed to take the delivery I had in that clumsy white Mitsubishi. I couldn't but park the car off the highway as soon as I saw a huge flash coming from the sky.
I thought it was only me who could see it, but a few cars were crashing into each other creating a deafening sound. I couldn't open my eyes, I could only listen. What was it that was dazzling us? Aliens? I heard people praying and others shouting that they could not see.
The highway was silenced by a lot of stopped cars, I heard people calling the emergency services but no one was answering them. A cold breeze shook my body, we were in the middle of summer so I thought I was feeling sick, but I looked down and could notice that there was no longer any glare but darkness.
Eran la una menos quince cuando todo comenzó. Había estado manejando por autopista inter estatal desde muy temprano y el tráfico era rápido, necesitaba con urgencia llevar el delivery que tenía en aquella torpe Mitsubishi blanca. No pude más que estacionar el auto fuera de la autopista apenas vi un enorme destello que provenía desde el cielo.
Creía que era solo yo el que podía verlo, pero unos cuantos automóviles estaban chocando unos con otros creando un sonido ensordecedor. No podía abrir los ojos, solo podía escuchar ¿Qué era aquello que nos encandilaba? ¿Extraterrestres? Escuchaba a gente orando y otros gritando que no podían ver.
La autopista quedó silenciada por un montón de autos detenidos, escuché a personas llamando a los servicios de emergencia pero nadie les atendía. Una brisa fría sacudió mi cuerpo, estábamos en pleno verano así que creí que me estaba sintiendo mal, pero bajé la vista y pude notar que ya no había ningún destello sino tinieblas.
I tried to look up and a huge portal appeared in the sky, rays were coming out of its surroundings but immediately my eyes began to feel heavy, were my eyelashes frozen in the middle of summer, the temperature had dropped a lot. The portal opening in the heavens had covered the sun in its entirety.
A thick fog covered the highway, I looked around for company, a blonde woman was resting on her car. I wanted to reach her, but a huge creature jumped on her and I could only hear the screams of that woman, suddenly I was surrounded by people fleeing in the presence of evil figures.
They had their jaws at the level of their foreheads and from them came out huge fangs as I had never seen before, they also expelled a foul smell and a green liquid came out of the corners of their mouths bathing their eyes, which were at the level of the human's chin. One arm came to rest on my man and my first instinct was to pull it away with a swipe.
Procuré alzar la vista y un enorme portal apareció en el cielo, salían rayos de sus alrededores pero de inmediato mis ojos comenzaron a sentirse pesados. ¿Estaban mis pestañas congeladas en pleno verano?, la temperatura había descendido muchísimo. El portal que se abría en los cielos había cubierto al sol en su totalidad.
Una espesa niebla cubrió la autopista, mire hacia mi alrededor en busca de compañía y vi a una mujer rubia descansando sobre su carro. Quise llegar hasta ella, pero una enorme criatura saltó sobre ella y solo pude escuchar los gritos de aquella mujer, de repente me vi rodeado de gente huyendo en presencia de unas figuras malignas.
Tenían la quijada a la altura de la frente y de ellas salían enormes colmillos como nunca antes había visto, también expelían un olor fétido y un líquido color verde salía de las comisuras de su boca bañando sus ojos, que estaban a la altura de la barbilla de los humanos. Un brazo se apoyó en mi hombro y el primer instinto que tuve fue retirarlo de un golpe.
To my delight a man was pointing something out to me, though in the darkness it was impossible to see what he was doing. Then I slowly approached his ear for him to whisper, I didn't know why he was acting so strange so I hesitantly agreed to his call, any false step could put me at risk.
— Don't move! They are blind, they are wandering in search of prey. There's your car. I'll throw this stone to distract them with the sound and we'll get in the car and lock the doors.
Now I understood, but my car was a company-owned van so if anything happened to that merchandise my hide would be on the line, but what the hell, I didn't even know if there was going to be a tomorrow. Then that man threw the stone and an army of creatures followed in his wake.
We got into the van as fast as we could and closed the door, but I noticed a small detail I hadn't noticed before. The passenger window had a defect that made it impossible to raise the glass without pressure, if that happened we would make a lot of noise, but if we didn't act quickly we would be lunch for those beasts.
Para mi beneplácito un hombre me estaba señalando algo, aunque en las tiniebla era imposible ver lo que hacía. Entonces me acerqué lentamente hasta su oído para que este susurrara, no sabía porque actuaba tan extraño así que accedí a su llamado con muchas dudas, cualquier paso en falso podía ponerme en riesgo.
— ¡No te muevas! Ellos están ciegos caminan erradamente en busca de alguna presa. Allí está tu auto. Lanzaré esta piedra para distraerlos con el sonido y nos subiremos al coche y cerraremos las puertas.
Ahora lo entendía, pero mi auto era una van propiedad de la empresa así que si algo le pasaba a aquella mercancía mi pellejo estaría en juego, ¿pero, qué demonios?, ni siquiera sabía si iba a haber un mañana. Entonces aquel hombre tiró la piedra y un ejército de criaturas siguió su paso.
No metimos tan rápido como pudimos a la van y cerramos la puerta, pero me percate de un pequeño detalle que antes no había tomado en cuenta. La ventana del copiloto tenía un defecto que hacía que no se pudiera subir el vidrio sin hacer presión, si eso pasaba haríamos mucho ruido, pero sino actuábamos rápido seríamos el almuerzo de aquellas bestias.
