A week ago today I was moving to another place, leaving behind the first place where I lived. Nothing new, a lot of things to pack and a bit of nervousness for what was to come, the most worrying thing was that in our new place there was no internet connection and we had to wait until the carnival festivities were over to have the new installation done.
It was at that moment when my partner and I were aware that we were going to be 3 days without internet, that we could not watch Netflix online or play League of Legends. So I proposed to download as much material as we could, that's how we downloaded several titles among them many episodes of Rupaul's Drag Race, the Tinder Swindler, Locky and a movie that my boyfriend had been insisting on watching.
I wasn't too keen on the title, but he insisted we watch it. So Monday afternoon we started watching it, with no prior information about the film to enhance the surprise effect. As I struggled not to fall asleep the movie started and I said well here we go, another Netflix movie. But the movie started to grab me in an incredible way keeping me awake until the end.
It is Ex Machina a 2014 independent film and the debut feature from its director and creator Alex Garland. Garland is known for making somewhat "weird" films that to me are a bit presumptuous because they are not for all audiences like Annihilation. Ex Machina It starred a bunch of actors whom I didn't know like Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, Oscar Isaac and Sonoya Mizuno. The film is in the science fiction genre, a pretty risky genre to start in the film world.
However this film won an Oscar in the 2016 edition for best special effects and I was very surprised to learn that it was shot entirely in real image and that the special effects were added in post-production. It received mixed reviews either for its resemblance to another movie called "Blade Runner" or for its plot holes. At some points it is somewhat predictable, but at others it is not.
However, the plot of the film is still interesting, nor its setting, nor how different it looks, and much less the themes it deals with. The body dimensions, how cold we are nowadays as a society and how we are becoming more and more machines and less and less human, social criticism, there is a lot in this film but does it work?

Nada nuevo un montón de cosas que empacar y un poco de nerviosismo por lo que estaba por venir, lo más preocupante era que en nuestros nuevo aposento no había conexión a internet y debiamos esperar a que las fiestas carnavalescas terminarán para que nos hicieran la nueva instalación.
Fue en ese instante cuando mi pareja y yo fuimos conscientes de que íbamos a estar 3 días sin internet, que no podíamos ver Netflix en línea o jugar League of Legends. Así que propuse descargar todo el material que pudiéramos, fue así que descargamos varios títulos entre ellos muchos episodios de Rupaul's Drag Race, el estafador de Tinder, Locky y una película que mi novio había estado insistiendo en ver.
A mí no me llamaba mucho la atención el título, pero él insistía en que la viéramos. Así que el lunes en la tarde la comenzamos a ver, sin información previa acerca del film para potenciar el efecto sorpresa. Mientras luchaba por no quedarme dormido la película comenzó y dije bien aquí vamos, otra película de Netflix. Pero la película comenzó a atraparme de una manera increíble manteniéndome despierto hasta el final.
Se trata de Ex Machina una película independiente del 2014 y la opera prima de su director y creador Alex Garland. Garland es conocido por hacer películas algo "extrañas" y que para mí son un poco presuntuosas porque no son para todo público como Annihilation. Ex Machina Fue protagonizada por un montón de actores a los cuales no conocía como Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, Oscar Isaac y Sonoya Mizuno. La película es del género ciencia ficción, un género bastante arriesgado para comenzar en el mundo cinematográfico.
Sin embargo este film ganó un Oscar en la edición de 2016 a los mejores efectos especiales y me sorprendí mucho al saber que fue rodada en su totalidad en imagen real y que los efectos especiales fueron agregados en post-producción. Recibió críticas mixtas ya sea por su parecido a otra película llamada "Blade Runner" o por sus vacíos argumentales. Es algún punto es algo predecible, pero en otros tantos no.
Igualmente no deja de ser interesante el argumento de la película, ni su ambientación, ni lo diferente que se ve y mucho menos los temas que trata. Las dimensiones corporales, lo fríos que somos actualmente como sociedad y como cada vez solo más máquinas y menos humanos, ¿crítica social?, existe mucha en esta película pero, ¿funciona?
Synopsis
A scientist named Nathan (Oscar Isaac) in his quest to create intelligent artificial life has brought a young programmer Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) to his remote home, a laboratory in the middle of nowhere. Caleb has been "chosen" through a contest by Nathan's company to interact with a prototype "female" robot named Ava (Alicia Vikander) to determine through the Turinhg test whether she really has a consciousness of her own or is just an incredible machine.
The story moves further tightening the relationship that Ava and Caleb have, as they see each other through "sessions" in which the two become intimate. Caleb is a rational person so he tries to convince himself that what is before his eyes is just a machine, however the conversations between the two take place in intimacy with sections titled like chapters in a science fiction book.
The house causes a claustrophobic environment, it is huge and has an endless number of rooms that are connected by an access card that restricts every corner of it. As the sequences unfold, we meet Kyoko (Sonoya Mizono) a "housekeeper" who fulfills the functions of a mistress and walks around the house in a ghostly way.
Meanwhile Ava tries to gain Caleb's trust and Nathan becomes less and less trustworthy. Caleb realizes that the reality he lives in may not exist and will question everything he has been doing when he discovers that Nathan has been using him as a guinea pig by using his porn history in his web browser to recreate Ava's face.
With a plot full of surprises, most of them driven by the characters and discoveries that once revealed become part of the story, the world of Ex Machina is one in which what you see is not what it seems, does that sound familiar?

Un científico llamado Nathan (Oscar Isaac) en su afán de crear vida artificial inteligente ha llevado a un joven programador Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) a su remota casa un laboratorio en el medio de la nada. Caleb ha sido "elegido" por medio de un concurso de la empresa de Nathan para interactuar con un prototipo de robot "femenino" llamado Ava (Alicia Vikander) para determinar a través del test de Turing si realmente tiene conciencia en sí misma o es sólo una increíble máquina.
La historia transcurre estrechando aún más la relación que tienen Ava y Caleb, a medida que se ven a través de "sesiones" en las cuales ambos llegan a intimar. Caleb es un persona racional así que trata de convencerse a sí mismo que lo está ante sus ojos es solo una máquina, sin embargo las conversaciones entre ambos transcurren en la intimidad con secciones tituladas como los capítulos de un libro de ciencia ficción.

Mientras tanto Ava intenta hacerse de la confianza de Caleb y Nathan se hace cada vez menos confiable. Caleb se da cuenta que la realidad que vive quizás no existe y pondrá en duda todo lo que hasta ahora iba haciendo, cuando descubre que Nathan lo ha estado utilizando como conejillo de Indias utilizando su historial de porno en su buscador web para recrear el rostro de Ava.
Con un argumento repleto de sorpresas, la mayoría de ellas impulsadas por los personajes y descubrimientos que una vez desvelados pasan a formar parte de la historia el mundo de Ex Machina es uno el cual lo que se ve no es lo que parece, ¿Te suena eso familiar?
My Opinion
The plot of Ex Machina is totally emotional and intimate, also sometimes suffocating and takes place in an environment controlled by Nathan the scientist of our story. The enclosed environment reminded me of the one we see in "The Shining" of course, distances aside, this film accomplishes its goals in less time than it needed to.
Alex Garland debuts with this film and does it wonderfully intertwining through simple language deeper things like elements of physics, mythology and society. The script is magnificent especially with an impeccable performance by Oscar Isaac, for me the best character of the film, even under his irony he knew how to perfectly interpret the ambitions of a technology magnate.
In some sections however, the script becomes almost predictable but Alex never loses control of his plot and does whatever he wants with the viewers. That particularity made me stay until the end, discovering that it wasn't so predictable after all is a weapon that became irresistible to me.
Mi Opinión
El argumento de Ex Machina es totalmente emocional e íntimo, también veces asfixiante y se desarrolla en un ambiente controlado por Nathan el científico de nuestra historia. El entorno encerrado me hizo recordar al que vemos en "El Resplandor" claro apartando las distancias, este film cumple sus objetivos en menos tiempo de lo que necesitaba.
Alex Garland se estrena con esta película y lo hace maravillosamente entrelazando a través de un lenguaje sencillo cosas más profundas como elementos de la Física, la mitología y la sociedad. El guion es magnífico sobre todo con una impecable actuación de Óscar Isaac para mí el mejor personaje del largometraje, incluso bajo su ironía supo interpretar perfectamente las ambiciones de un magnate de la tecnología.
En algunos tramos sin embargo, el guion se vuelve casi predecible pero Alex nunca pierde el control de su argumento y hace lo que le da la gana con los espectadores. Esa particularidad hizo que me quedara hasta el final, descubrir que después de todo no era tan predecible es un arma que se me hizo irresistible.
"Ex Machina" in general terms takes the time to talk to us about complicated terms in a simple way however in a slightly presumptuous and sometimes overwhelming atmosphere. Machismo, misogyny, science, gender roles, and more abstract things like how immersed we are in the world of technology are all dealt with at least superficially by the script.
Caleb and Ava have an increasingly intimate relationship and at that point we see how even the most rational beings fall into a farce, in the face of moral and love concepts. Ex Machina tries to recreate that vision we have of the female body and does so through the eyes of a scientist playing God by creating a harem of female robots fitted to a mold.
Caleb reveals himself and realizes he has been fooled but that is where he loses the battle of rationality, who is fooling who. This is a fairly classic film but with enough plot twists to keep you gripped throughout its duration. I would watch it again if, maybe in some time in the meantime I hope you will trust my humble recommendation, it's good I assure you!
"Ex Machina" en términos generales se toma el tiempo de hablarnos de términos complicados en una forma sencilla sin embargo en una atmósfera un poco presuntuosa y a veces abrumadora. Machismo, misoginia, ciencia, roles de género y cosas más abstractas como lo inmersos que estamos en el mundo de la tecnología son temas tratados al menos superficialmente por el guion.
Caleb y Ava tienen una relación cada vez más íntima y en ese punto vemos cómo hasta los seres más racionales caen rendidos en una farsa, ante conceptos morales y amorosos. Ex Machina trata de recrear esa visión que tenemos del cuerpo femenino y lo hace a través de los ojos de un científico jugando a ser Dios creando un harén de robots femeninos ajustados a un molde.
Caleb se revela y se da cuenta que ha sido engañado pero es allí donde pierde la batalla de la racionalidad, ¿quién engaña a quién?. Esta es una película bastante clásica pero con suficientes giros argumentativos para mantenerte atrapado durante toda su duración. La volvería a ver si, quizás en algún tiempo mientras tanto espero que ustedes confíen en mi humilde recomendación. ¡Es buena se los aseguro!
