I arrived early, to tell the truth I arrived earlier than any other place in my life. It was an extremely important moment for my future and I took it for granted that it was going to be quite a difficult process since the American embassy was very demanding. I left spotless, with all the elegance I had inherited, I assumed I should be comfortable because you can't be yourself if you are uncomfortable.
I was assuming too much, my heart was beating faster than normal. It was not for less, being there was perhaps the beginning of a new opportunity, maybe getting to know that great nation that I had always admired for its democratic ideals and freedoms would make me a better human being. When I entered the embassy a man was standing at the door.
I noticed what he looked like and thought about saying good morning to him in English, but that might have sounded too pathetic. He was just a guard, so I just shook my head in greeting and said good morning in a stutter. The man was quite short in stature, wearing a perfectly pressed gray uniform.
Llegué temprano, a decir verdad llegué más temprano que a cualquier otro lugar en mi vida. Era un momento sumamente importante para mi futuro y yo daba por sentado que iba a ser un proceso bastante difícil puesto que la embajada americana era muy exigente. Me fui impoluto, con toda la elegancia que había heredado, supuse que debía estar cómodo puedo porque no puedes ser tú mismo si estas incómodo.
Estaba suponiendo demasiado, mi corazón latía a una velocidad más rápida de lo normal. No era para menos, estar ahí era quizás el comienzo de una nueva oportunidad, quizás conocer a esa gran nación que siempre había admirado por sus ideales democráticos y libertades me haría un mejor ser humano. Cuando ingresé a la embajada un hombre está parado en la puerta.
Me fijé en su aspecto y pensé en darle los buenos días en inglés, pero eso quizás hubiera sonado muy patético. Era solo un vigilante, así que dispuse solo a mover la cabeza a en señal de saludo y a decir buenos días tartamudeando. El señor era bastante bajo de estatura, llevaba un uniforme gris perfectamente planchado.
His shoes were shinier than mine and he wore a badge on which you could read his name, or rather his last name, Reyes, the watchman Reyes. With a friendly smile he returned my greeting.
— Good morning citizen, where are you going?
— I am here for my visa appointment, I have been selected in the visa lottery.

— ¡Enhorabuena!, que suertudo es usted. Por allá —dijo señalando a una señora regordeta con cara de pocos amigos— le van a dar más información acerca de los pasos a seguir.
— ¡Muchas gracias! —dije apretando con excesiva efusividad su mano.
In the internal lockers there were two women and two men, a brown woman and a white woman. The men seemed engrossed in the computer. For her part the plump woman didn't utter a sound when I said good morning and just pointed like a finger to where I should sit.
I had been participating in the visa lottery for years, looking for a chance at a Green Card. Now I was closer than ever to achieving my dreams, so much so that I asked for an advance on my paycheck to get to the embassy appointment. I felt lucky, even though I knew that winning didn't necessarily mean I would get the green card.
The Green Card allows you to live as a legal resident in the United States, I knew that it was almost impossible to win the lottery that is held annually and in which millions of people participate. But I was not going to stop trying for at least the last 5 years, and when I was finally going to give up I decided to participate once again.
Fate rewarded me, but the remaining 50% was now up to me. If I could get the approval, nothing would stop me on my way to the most powerful nation on the planet. Now my fate depended on how well the official who served me liked me and whether or not I qualified for the visa for a dream.
En las taquillas internas había dos mujeres y dos hombres, una mujer morena y otra mujer blanca. Los hombres parecían absortos en la computadora. Por su parte la mujer regordeta no emitió ni un sonido cuando le di los buenos días y solo se dispuso a indicarme como un dedo a donde debía sentarme.
Tenía años participando en la lotería de visas, buscando una oportunidad con la Green Card. Ahora estaba más cerca que nunca de alcanzar mis sueños, tanto que pedí un adelanto de mi sueldo para llegar a la cita en la embajada. Me sentía afortunado, aunque sabía que ganar no necesariamente significaba que me iban a otorgar la tarjeta verde.
La Green Card te permite vivir como residente legal en el territorio de los Estados Unidos, sabía que era casi imposible llegar a ganar la lotería que se realiza anualmente y en la que participan millones de personas. Pero no por eso iba a dejar de intentarlo por lo menos en los últimos 5 años, y cuando finalmente iba a desistir decidí participar una vez más.
El destino me premió, pero el 50% restante ahora me correspondía a mí. Si lograba conseguir la aprobación ya nada me detendría en mi camino hacia la nación más poderosa del planeta. Ahora mi suerte dependía de que tan bien le caía al funcionario que me atendía y si calificaba o no a la visa por un sueño.
