Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!
However, on the 26th one, I have decided that it is big enough to call this series a Library!
What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!
In this series, I will review one unit at a time, picking them randomly.
So let me spin the wheel again and see what I get:
Space Marines, Marneus Calgar
10th Edition Codex
Marnues Calgar is the Chapter Master of the Ultramarines Chapter of Space Marines. The Ultramarines are a First Founding Chapter, originally a Legion led by the Primarch Roboute Guilliman in the 31st Millenium.
After the Horus Heresy, the Legions were split apart into Chapters 1,000 Space Marines strong. The Primarchs left the theatre of war and the Chapters were led by the Chapter Masters.
Other Successor Chapters, with the same heritage and gene-seed as the Ultramarines were spread throughout the galaxy, though in the present setting, there is a region of space known as the Realm of Ultramar that is governed by the Ultramarines and contains 10 Chapters of Space Marines, all sons of Guilliman in this area.
This happened after the resurrection of the Primarch and his Indomitus Crusade, his gene sons formed a Legion in all but name under the Primarch's banner.
Even though the Primarch had returned, he did not unseat Marneus Calgar. The Primarch studied the histories and kept this master of strategy right where he was, confident in this son of his to hold Ultramar steady while the Avenging Son took on other duties in the greater galactic conflict.
Well... enough of the history lesson. Let's get to Calgar's rules!
Calgar costs 185pts, which is a lot for a Space Marine hero, but he comes with 2x body guards who are the Victrix Honour Guard. These additional bodies join him and any squad Calgar leads and are basically Bladeguard (with a better armor save).
Calgar himself in his current form has crossed the Rubicon (become Primaris) and wears Gravis Armor.
His previous versions had him wearing Power Armor and then Terminator Armor and now Gravis. Now he just needs to wear Phobos armor too! LOL

Abilities
But the Chapter Master brings a boatload of abilities that support the whole army.
Inspiring Leader
While Calgar leads a unit, they can Shoot and Charge in turns that they Fall back or Advance.
Master Tactician
At the start of your command phase, if Calgar is on the battlefield, you can an additional CP. No ifs or buts like the Tallyman for Death Guard, it just happens.
Do note, however, he needs to have his feet on the board so riding in a transport or hanging out in Reserves means that this ability does not come into effect.
Honour Guard of Macragge
This is more a rule for the Victrix Honour Guard than for Calgar.
While one or both of the Honour Guard is alive, Calgar gets a 4+ Feel No Pain.
The only way that Calgar takes damage before them is if someone with Precision is trying to kill him directly. In this case, they still protect him with this rule.
Lastly, I would like to point out something else about Marnues Calgar... usually Characters and Epic Heroes fall into a certain archetype which pairs them naturally with a unit they are compatible with. Eg: Terminator Captains and Epic Heroes wearing Terminator armor can only join units of Terminators, Characters with Jump Packs can only join units with Jump Packs and so on.
Calgar wears Gravis Armor, his Honour Guard does not. But he can join Gravis units, or Tacticus units or Power Armor units. This can make his play use in a game incredibly varied.
The list of units that he can join are as follows:
Aggressor Squad (Gravis)
Assault Intercessor Squad
Bladeguard Veteran Squad
Company Heroes
Eradicator Squad (Gravis)
Heavy Intercessor Squad (Gravis)
Infernus Squad
Intercessor Squad
Sternguard Veteran Squad
Tactical Squad
