Qurator's Monday Missions Entry - Valentine's

It's been 2 years since I wrote a post on my views on Valentine's Day and I have to say, not much has changed since then. I thought it would be nice to go over some points I made in that old post and bring that subject up again, as part of my entry for @qurator's Monday Missions.

My views on Valentine's day broken down into few points:

Too commercialized, overrated and focused on consumerism

Even though I think that celebrating love (any sort of positive feeling really) is always nice and this world we live in could always use more of that, I also think we don't need any specific day to do so. I know that nowadays' lifestyles can be a little bit too hectic, stressed and rushed so maybe taking one day to enjoy some extra romantic gestures is what people need but in my head, I still cannot "justify" the entire Valentine's day drama. (I swear I'm not a hater, lol). I also feel there is a certain pressure and obligation that comes with being in a relationship and "celebrating" Valetine's day as a couple. In today's modern age of consumerism, I came across a few people asking questions like "What you got for Valentine's day?" and a controled shocking face if you're in a realtionship and say "Nothing."

Playing it safe

Like I mentioned in my old post, I do love roses and I do love chocolate but it's just way too predictable. It's almost like "playing it safe" with these two options. I would appreciate them so much more if they were given on a random, "no occasion" occasion. With that being said, I am someone who is very grateful for any gift (in general, not only from a partner), that's just how I was raised I guess so I would still appreciate roses and chocolates. :)

Lack of creativity

In that old post of mine I also mentioned a YouTuber Casey Neistat who made a video for his wife as a form of appreciation for Valentine's day. That is an example of someone using what they're good at, in his case it's filming and video editiing, to create something different and unique. Someone who is good at writing, could write a note or even a hand-written love letter, someone who is good at baking could make delicious muffins/cake etc. I also like the idea of food/drinks baskets. You just have to know the taste of the other person, fill it up, wrap it up nicely and it makes a more personalized gift for coffee lovers, wine lovers, healthy food lovers, beer lovers... You get the idea.

This is love :)

So my overall opinion about Valentine's day is that each year it takes away more money from people in a realtionship who feel some sort of pressure to "do it right" without much creativity and personal touch to what they are giving. Social expectations are pretty high these days in pretty much all aspects of our lives and we've all been (still are) victims of that. I know that I still have a long way to go to liberate myself from many of those expectations but I'm glad I got this one out of the way. :D And if you are someone who enjoys celebrating Valentine's day and goes all the way for it, go ahead and do that! You do you! This is just a personal opinion and it wasn't meant to offend anyone, just thought I would point that out.
