Edge Sorting - design your game badly and I will win millions!

To be more specific, it is about mistakes, or rather inaccuracy when producing game cards. Marking cards compared to this technique is a simple, easily detectable trick.

WARNING: This post is not intended to teach anyone how to gain advantage in a dishonest way in any card game. I wanted only to get you familiar with the trick, which it is very difficult to master, anyway. Also, sorry for my english, I'm Polish.

If you have cheap deck of cards at home, find them (search for the cards with no margins on the back) - maybe they will give you more fun when reading this post. There is a good chance that your deck has a defect and your uncle guessed right at the party that you were cheating ;D

Edge Sorting

The technique I want to present to you iscalled Edge Sorting. It's about observing the imperfections of the card printing near the edge. Skilled players with huge brains are able to use this little information to have an edge in the game!

To show you what I mean, I created an animated gif - scanning bad cards I own:

Notice how the left edge of the cards change! When analyzing the size of the "uncovered" diamond symbol of the mosaic at the edge, we know what card we are dealt (in fact, rather the range of cards low/high but it's enough).

Of course not all cards in the deck differ so much. Cards are cut from one big sheet of paper, so the difference between low and high cards will be significant! And that just gives the edge in many casino games.

And casinos are very fond of using this type of cards because they give the impression of bigger/nicer/luxurious (?) or there is some other reason I'm not familiar with (maybe good price considering how many dech are wasted every day).

These are much better made cards. Because the pattern is printed with margin on each card, it is the same (pattern) - and the fact of variant margins is not a problem, no exploit possible.

The poker king used a minimal advantage to win millions of dollars

The Borgata casino used similar decks to mine, but with the circles pattern in the mosaic- even easier to notice the difference

Phil Ivey is a great poker player and an after-hours gambling fan. As a poker player, he can use even minimal advantage.

You have to understand that in the casino when you have money, you're treated like a king. This allows rich players to be treated indulgently and thus:

  • dealers are asked to reverse the card after the hand
  • the player can choose the shuffling method (machine instead of hands)
  • Phil Ivey even asked for a specific deck of cards (!!!)

This way you can tell which cards have are which. Shuffling is quite important - when the deck is shuffled by hands, orientation of the cards is mixed (up - down). By sorting in the machine, the orientation is the same. And the third point? Ivey was famous and liked in the casino so he was allowed of such practises.

Who is guilty?!

On the one hand, the casino allowed Phil to take the edge and probably guessed what was going on, so why it wasn't stopped fast?

Casino's Heads and Phil met in the court after filling the charges. According to the 2016 sentence, Ivey had to pay $ 10 million back (he won $ 9.6 million playing with this technique in baccarat). Ivey tried to defend himself by saying that if he found an advantage couldn't he use it?

Amazing, right? Thanks for your attention!

I recommend fully plastic cards (they can be washed) or regular good cards called bicycle.
