Not a day goes by without another article or news report about how "progressives" (Alinskyites/Marxists/Democrats/Liberals) are working to destroy free speech and impose radical suppression of thought and action through indoctrination, threats, extortion and even violence. The last few days have not revealed any letup whatsoever.
Lloyd Billingsley's article demonstates that the leftists infesting American universities are now eating their own by limiting access to classes, restricting class sizes and taking any measures to suppress free speech and the conservative point of view. As David French points out, the radical assault on free speech is certainly not limited to conservatives. French describes the attack upon Professor Rebecca Tuvel, who had the temerity to express an unapproved point of view. How far has it gone? Read Tom Knighton's piece, which explains that the University of Arizona is now hiring Thought Police to make sure no one strays from approved leftist dogma. Apparently while the State of California believes it can refuse to help the federal government enforce federal laws, the University of California believes it can simply ignore California law. This should be considered scary. If one of the finest university systems in the country can choose to ignore laws passed by the voters of California, what messages does it send to the almost 250,000 students in the University of California system? Perhaps it delivers a single message: the law is not for the powerful. Perhaps it delivers a second message: If one violates the law or threatens the system, the system will violate the law to insure stability.
The Left has ruined colleges. Is that a shock? They basically ruin anything they touch (think Venezuela). There appears to be only one group of grownups running a university today – The University of Chicago. Most colleges have a laundry list of imaginary rights people supposedly have and ways not to offend people of race, color, sex or sexual orientation.
Professor Fink, also a practicing attorney, began teaching at UCLA in 2008 and proved popular with students, particularly on the subject of free speech. The courses, on the other hand, did not earn respect from politically correct campus bosses who have restricted access to his classes and now, he says, seek to have him fired. As professor Fink told Frontpage:
“They are all afraid of a vocal, rational intelligent conservative who can provide a check on the progressive narrative they seek to indoctrinate the students with and empowers the students with knowledge of their rights on how to fight against the UC when their rights are being violated.”
Every single time I think the academy has reached peak intolerance and peak insanity, it proves me wrong. There is no argument that is too stupid for academic radicals. There is no lie that these “scholars” aren’t willing to tell to advance their agenda.
The Baylor Lariat reports on Saturday, the Kappa Sigma fraternity hosted a “Mexican-themed” “Cinco de Drinko” party. Attendees allegedly wore sombreros and serapes to the event. According to the Waco Tribune-Herald, students reported participants were also dressed up as construction workers and chanted “build the wall,” in reference to President Trump’s promise to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Baylor administrators were quick to condemn the incident. In a statement on the Baylor website the day after the event, vice president for student life Kevin P. Jackson called the fraternity’s event “racially insensitive” and contrary to the school’s Christian mission of a “caring and diverse campus community.”
On college campuses, so-called “progressives” routinely dub speakers they dislike “fascists.” The former head of the Democratic National Committee now claims the horrifying things these “fascists” say qualify as “hate speech,” which falls outside First Amendment protection. Apparently, the new theory goes, what falls inside constitutional protection are the threats and acts of violence that “anti-fascists” wield both against the speakers as well as those coming to listen.
The University of Arizona is paying students $10 per hour to assume the responsibilities of “Social Justice Advocates.” (i.i. ThoughtPolice)
Successful applicants will be expected to “report any bias incidents or claims to appropriate Residence Life staff” in addition to hosting bi-semesterly “Real Talks” with dorm residents.(As I said, ThoughtPolice)
The effort by liberal activists on campus to shutdown Kirchick's event is just the latest salvo in a larger campus war over free speech rights for those with conservative political views. DePaul students appear to object to Kirchick not because of his gay rights activism, but because of his right-leaning political views, despite the fact that Kirchick has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump.
A professor of theology at Duke University is resigning rather than facing disciplinary measures for criticizing a "Racial Equality Institute" training program.
Paul Griffiths, Warren professor of Catholic theology, responded to a faculty-wide email announcing the program by criticizing it as a waste of time and declaring that it would be "intellectually flaccid."
...Off we go to the Numbskull Olympics. Taking the gold for Freestyle Idiocy is California Democrat Senator Kamala Harris, who is incredibly stupid even for a California Democrat senator. She tweeted that 129 million people are going to lose their health insurance and presumably die. This is surprising, both because the 129 million figure is so insanely dumb that merely seeing that figure drops the reader’s IQ into freefall, and also because Kamala somehow managed to count past 10 without taking her shoes off.
Not even the job security that is supposed to come with tenure is safe from the current climate of political correctness on college campuses. Professor John McAdams, a tenured professor at Marquette University, was fired after he wrote a blog post defending a student’s right to have a personal opinion. The post was in response to a different professor, who reportedly told the student not to express his opinion on same-sex marriage during class.
