Attractions of Dalat: #7 Elephant Falls

The dramatic Elephant Falls is a spectacular waterfall in Lam Dong Province in the heart of a mountainous region in the South of Vietnam. This area is heavily farmed and most of the scenery is cultivated but one part has escaped untouched. The falls are found about 20 miles to the southwest of the mountain town of Dalat.

The spectacular Elephant Falls

To find the Elephant Falls Dalat, take Hoang Van Thu and head west from the centre of town. Turn left at the signpost for Ta Nung village and as you reach Nam Ban village a couple of miles later, you should see a sign to the falls on the right hand side, just before the road crossing a bridge over a river.

The only real evidence of development at the falls is the placement of a blue handrail to guide you over the rocks. As these are very treacherous, that is a welcome thing. Once you have navigated your way through the undergrowth and stumbled over slippery rocks with the roaring waterfall getting ever louder, you find yourself right at the bottom of the falls. From here they are extremely spectacular and look much larger than their 100 feet height would suggest. There are some huge rocks in the middle of the river, the bravest get to enjoy the best views from here.

There is small coffee shop here which is worth a visit, a nice place to sit and catch your breath. They use good quality beans which are also sold by the bag. Elephant Falls Dalat is a great place to explore and these trips out to attractions like the falls, have the added benefit of taking you through fascinating little villages and truly magnificent countryside.

Always respect the locals and their ways, you will be rewarded with some of the finest hospitality you have ever come across.
