Hello friends! Today Sunday I wanted to do a review, I had not been able to watch any movie this week so I rushed to choose one from the Netflix catalog. It took me quite a while because I'm not one to choose movies randomly, for me they must meet several requirements to create my own review.
The first is that not so many reviews have been published in the community of the production I have chosen, although, I prefer that no review has been published; the second is that it is a film that is out of the ordinary that is to say that it attracts me when I look at its poster and thirdly it has to have a fairly interesting premise.
The first feature film I found was a Spanish film that I had no idea had been released recently and although it was originally titled simply The Beast the director of the film decided to change the title to The Wasteland. Spain has great productions in the horror genre so I decided to give this film that had already been in production since 2020 a chance.
The film that was released on January 6, 2022 is the debut feature of director David Casademunt who has a long experience in short films and music videos. Its central theme is loneliness, isolation and how living apart from our peers can bring serious problems to our mental health. I mistakenly thought that there had to be some kind of parallelism with covid-19 confinement, but the director had already been working on this story since 2014 so it was better not to look for further explanations and enjoy the film.
Something that attracted me of course, was that one of the main actresses was Inma Cuesta whose interpretation of Raquel in The mess you leave behind I loved, so I already had high expectations. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how well the little protagonist Asier Flores has done, who, without a doubt, is the one who makes the movie interesting.

Me costó bastante porque no soy de los que elige películas de forma aleatoria, para mí deben cumplir varios requisitos para crear mi propia crítica.
Lo primero es que no se hayan publicado tantas reseñas en la comunidad de la producción que haya elegido, aunque, prefiero que no se haya publicado ninguna reseña; lo segundo es que sea una película que se salga de lo común es decir que me atraiga al mirar su póster y en tercer lugar tiene que tener una premisa bastante interesante.
El primer largometraje que encontré fue una película española que no tenía idea se había estrenado hace poco y aunque en un principio se había titulado simplemente La bestia el director de la película decidió cambiar el título a El Páramo. España tiene grandes producciones en el género del terror así que decidí darle una oportunidad a este filme que ya se venía produciendo desde 2020.
La película que se estrenó el 6 de enero de 2022 es la ópera prima del director David Casademunt quién tiene una larga experiencia en cortometrajes y videoclips. Tiene como tema central la soledad, el aislamiento y como vivir separados de nuestros semejantes puede traer serios problemas a nuestra salud mental. Creí erróneamente que tenía que haber algún tipo de paralelismo con el confinamiento por covid-19, pero el director ya venía gestando está historia desde 2014 así que mejor era no buscar más explicaciones y disfrutar de la película.
Algo que me atrajo por supuesto, fue que una de las actrices principales era Inma Cuesta cuya interpretación de Raquel en El desorden que dejas me encantó, así que ya tenía grandes expectativas. Sin embargo, quedé gratamente sorprendido de lo bien que lo ha hecho el pequeño protagonista Asier Flores que, sin lugar a dudas es quien hace que la película sea interesante.
Synopsis
Nineteenth century Spain is a country devastated by war, a family flees the terror and isolates itself in the cold plains of a disturbing region. So any place is a better place to raise a child. Salvador (Roberto Álamo) is the father, Lucía (Inma Cuesta) the mother and Diego (Asier Flores) is the son. Diego suffers from constant nightmares and for some reason we don't know the family bathroom is ridiculously far from the house so going to urinate represents a real odyssey.
Lucia is a great mother, she fills her son with fun and helps him imagine a better reality. They are in the middle of nowhere, they have a vegetable garden, a rabbit farm where they mercilessly kill rabbits for food, a horse and a scarecrow that serves as a daily reminder that they can't go too far or there will be trouble.
Salvador, who is a man quite disturbed by his family history, wants Diego to become a man and stop helping his mother with things around the house. While he wants his son to learn to kill rabbits for dinner, Lucia wants to preserve his innocence so this triggers some questioning. Salvador is not bad, he just wants his son to learn that the world is not the way his mother paints it. Diego, who doesn't have much to do, spends his day spying on his parents and discovers his father practicing a possible suicide with his rifle.
Salvador, who doesn't have much to do either, tells Diego his sister's terrifying story. The sister's story is the typical one that no one talks about and tells the story of a girl who was stalked by a beast, a tall, thin figure with a human appearance and no eyes that drives those who fear it to madness causing them to commit suicide.
Years later Salvador who is a depressive man and who blames himself for the death of his sister gets a severely wounded stranger floating in a boat down the river, then the family decides to cure him and feed him, but before any of this can happen the guy takes a shotgun and shoots himself in the head in front of Lucia and Diego. Salvador decides that the best thing to do is to find the stranger's family and give them the body, so he decides to leave his own wife and son alone in the middle of nowhere. The rest you will have to find out.
Sinopsis
La España del Siglo XIX es un país devastado por la guerra, una familia huye del terror y se aísla en las llanuras frías de una región perturbadora. Así que cualquier lugar es mejor para criar a un niño. Salvador (Roberto Álamo) es el padre, Lucía (Inma Cuesta) la madre y Diego (Asier Flores) es el hijo. Diego sufre de constantes pesadillas y por alguna razón que no sabemos el baño de la familia queda ridículamente lejos de la casa por lo que ir a orinar representa una verdadera odisea.
Lucía es una gran madre, llena a su hijo de diversión y lo ayuda a imaginar que viven una mejor realidad. Están en el medio de la nada, tienen un huerto, un criadero de conejos a quienes matan sin compasión para comer, un caballo y un espantapájaros que sirve como límite para recordar a diario que no pueden ir muy lejos o habrá problemas.
Salvador que es un hombre bastante perturbado por su historia familiar, quiere que Diego se convierta en un hombre y dejé de ayudar a su mamá en las cosas de la casa. Mientras él quiere que su hijo aprenda a matar conejos para la cena, Lucía quiere preservar su inocencia así que esto desata algunos cuestionamientos. Salvador no es malo, solo quiere que su hijo aprenda que el mundo no es como su mamá lo pinta. Diego que no tiene mucho que hacer, pasa su día espiando a sus padres y descubre a su padre practicando con su rifle un posible suicidio.
Salvador que tampoco tiene mucho que hacer, le cuenta la aterradora historia de su hermana a Diego. La historia de la hermana es la típica de la que nadie habla y relata la historia de una chica que fue acechada por una bestia, una figura alta y delgada con aspecto humano y sin ojos que lleva a la locura aquellos que le temen haciendo que se suiciden.
Años después Salvador que es un hombre depresivo y que se culpa de la muerte de su hermana se consigue un forastero gravemente herido flotando en una lancha por el rio, entonces la familia decide curarlo y darle de comer, pero antes de que algo de esto suceda el tipo coge una escopeta y se dispara en la cabeza delante de Lucia y Diego. Salvador decide que lo mejor que puede hacer es encontrar a la familia del forastero y entregarles el cuerpo, así que se le ocurre dejar a su propia esposa e hijo solos en medio de la nada. Lo demás ustedes tendrán que descubrirlo.
My Opinion
The main element of The Wasteland is its setting, the director uses a lot of locations and defines it as a horror film that is also a period film, and I think the thought of being left without internet in an isolated place is what terrified me the most. The film doesn't achieve its goal, it doesn't manage to scare, but it is excellently made.
The photography was exquisite and also the costumes, everything was in its place, although I think the duration was exaggerated. In a little less time the director would have found a better finish and the opportunity to not have to resort to so many horror movie clichés.
What I enjoyed most about the film was the transition, the development and evolution of its characters. First of all, we have an impeccable performance by Inma Cuesta, who once again captivates me and her character is the one that changes the most during the production. In an instant she is a positive woman and a great mother to end up under the madness that affects the people of this plain.
Mi Opinión
El principal elemento de El Páramo es su ambientación, el director recurre mucho a las locaciones y la define como una película de terror que también es de época, y creo que el pensar quedarme sin internet en un lugar aislado es lo que más me aterró. La película no logra su cometido, no logra espantar, pero esta excelentemente bien hecha.
La fotografía estuvo exquisita y también el vestuario, todo estuvo en su lugar, aunque creo que la duración fue exagerada. En poco menos tiempo el director hubiera encontrado un mejor acabado y la oportunidad de no tener que recurrir a tantos clichés del cine terror.
Lo que más disfrute del filme fue la transición, el desarrollo y evolución de sus personajes. En primer lugar, tenemos a una impecable actuación de Inma Cuesta, que de nuevo me logra cautivar y es que su personaje es el que más cambios tiene durante la producción. En un instante es una mujer positiva y una gran madre para de un momento a otro terminar bajo la locura que incide en las personas de esta llanura.
Another one who was perfect was Asier Flores, who for me is the best of this film. He is only 11 years old, but he will surely be a big star, as his performance was well done and not to mention the chemistry he had with Inma Cuesta. Simply put, the mother-son connection was very enjoyable.
It is a simple production, that keeps you connected throughout its duration, even if it has no major pretensions it was fine. For me it's a forgettable film with a great cast and a director who may be famous someday, it's a good start. An acceptable one and one that I recommend you to see in one of these early days of the year.
Otro que estuvo perfecto fue Asier Flores, quien para mi es lo mejor de esta película. Tan solo tiene 11 años, pero seguramente será una gran estrella, ya que su actuación estuvo bien lograda y ni hablar de la química que tuvo con Inma Cuesta. Sencillamente la conexión madre-hijo fue muy disfrutable.
Es una producción sencilla, que te mantiene conectado durante toda su duración, aunque no tenga mayores pretensiones estuvo bien. Para mi es una película olvidable con un gran elenco y un director que quizás sea famoso algún día, es un buen comienzo. Uno aceptable y que les recomiendo ver en unos de estos días de comienzos de año.
