Crossing Puget Sound - Wistful Washington

For everyone living, working or just traveling around the Puget Sound (pronounced PEW-git) in Washington State, the ferry is just part of the landscape. I remember seeing these vessels when I was a child, visiting relatives in Seattle.

I also remember the first time I got to actually travel on one of these ferries - going from Seattle to Bremerton. Later on, when we went to Expo 86 in Vancouver, BC, we took one of the Port Townsend ferries as we had decided to go around the Olympic Peninsula, very much like what my little family did in August 2019.

For those of us who do not take the ferry often, waiting for the ferry in Port Townsend is exciting. Anticipation heightens as you catch the first glimpse of the vehicle you will be taking across the Sound.

(Forgive the graininess of the pictures today, the lingering fog wreaked havoc on my pictures.)

The journey between Port Townsend and Coupeville is actually very straight with only sharp bend as you approach either end. So, yes, this ship looks like it's going to go right past us, but it turns at almost the last minute.

Our vessel that day was the Salish (pronounced SAY-lish) after the tribe and language name (one of the two historic regional trade languages of the native tribes - the other being Chinook.)

I didn't take other pictures of the vessel while on board and the ones I took as we sailed were of poor quality due to the fog - almost burned off in the heat of the day, but still enough to ruin pictures with graininess! (I will endeavor to learn how to overcome this before the next journey! Of course, I've changed cameras now too.)

Here's a nice video of the Mukilteo (muh-kill-TEE-oh) ferry journey - not mine, obviously, but he's got some nice clips of the other parts of the ship.

And here's why you want to have fair weather when making the sailing... (My husband was saying that he was glad he hadn't seen this before we made the journey!)

So, good weather is advised!

Next time, I'll share with you some of what we found after got out of Coupeville (a tourist trap that I can't recommend if you're on any sort of budget.)

Photos taken by myself in August 2019 with my Pentax K30.
