The pecan sat on the table. The boy, giddy with excitement, crossed the floor like a skater on the ice and, with the spoon in his hand, swatted at the pecan like he was at bat in a major league game.
He missed. A pebble on the ground tripped him up.
Crashing to the ground, the boy gets back up. He was not through with the task that he gave himself so he hurried to the back of the couch where he started and made his way at the pecan again, this time he would score.
The skates clicked and clack. He dodged a few pebbles, a narrow escape with the last one. His short, light hair lifts off his face by the small breeze his speed created.
Swings.
The pecan was swatted off the table like a pirate being shot from a cannon and it landed in mom's favorite crystal cup, the very one she told him not to play with because it meant something very dear to her.
