Deception Pass Bridge and State Park - Wistful Washington

One place I knew I wanted to stop and get pictures as we drove up Whidbey Island was Deception Pass State Park. I've had pictures of it before, but from the road level. This time, I would get pictures from the beach!

Deception Pass Bridge connects Whidbey Island (to the south) and Fidalgo Island (to the north). Before this bridge, people wanting to travel to and from Whidbey Island had to do so via one of the ferries.

Built in 1934-1935, this bridge actually consists of two bridges, Deception Pass Bridge (976-foot span) (shown in my photos) and Canoe Pass Bridge (511-foot span). Sadly, this is also a favorite place to jump for the suicidal (aided by the relatively low railing); over 400 deaths since the bridge was opened in 1935.

In 2019, they began a two-year project to restore the bridge, but we found no disruption to our travels. Maybe they took the summer off.

Anyway, here are two images I took from the beach on a glorious summer day in August 2019, followed by the picture I took in November 2013 heading south for a wedding. That time, the weather was much more typical for the area, overcast, though not actually rainy.

Coming back up the trail from the beach, this log seemed to beckon. Probably a pine or fir blown over by a winter gale. Sword ferns adorn to the side.

And here, "chicken of the woods" fungus is sprouting on a downed pine. A few days older and I would have been very tempted to harvest some as it's a very good edible.

Here is some beautiful drone footage (not mine) that I found on YouTube.
