The Light: The Weekend Freewrite - 10/19/2019

Hanna stood in the impossible night of the forest, her eyes fixed on that one spark of light.

"Go on," said Max whose cut-eye look railed into Hanna. "Are you going to chicken out?"

Green stood nervously by Hanna's side. "Hanna, we were supposed to be home an hour ago. Let's forget this stupid bet and get out of here."

Hanna stood still, the spark of light seemed to dance in a hypnotic way.

"I'm beginning to think," Max said swinging the stick he held in his hand, "that you are going to chicken out. In fact, I think the dog has more guts than you."

The dog sniffed the air and the ground but it was stuck by Hanna's side waiting for her signal to move forward or take off.

Hanna thought the light was calling her but she couldn't make out what it was saying. She refined her glasses with a spit polish shine and her torn dress before putting them back on her face. Why did I choose dare of all things, Hanna thought.

Think that your seeds will germinate and that the plans will grow rushed passed Hanna's fears and doubts.

"Here goes," she said.

All three of them and the dog held their breath as Hanna stretched her arm out and touched the light with her finger.

Nothing happened. They all let go of there breath.

"See," said Max. "Nothing happened just like I said."

But then a rumbling sound could be heard off in the distance coming toward them. It sounded like a colony of bats with a thirst for blood.

"What is that?" asked Green. His hand was now gripping Hanna's and she had to break free before he cut off the circulation and broke her hand away from her body.

Rubbing her hand, Hanna said, "We must stay put. The light said that our plans will grow from the seeds that were germinated.

Once the sound arrived, it engulfed them like a shirt two sizes too small.

This is pure joy Hanna thought as she embraced the sound that came through the darkness. She could see the future and what it was going to be like for her. Pure joy with many challenges.

Max was not so lucky. His eyes filled with dread as he saw how the seeds he had planted grew in the minds of others. His life was filled with hardship, one that he did not know if he could live through. He enjoyed being the bully but the future showed him that the table would soon be turning.

Green was at peace with his future. He was on a straight track that nourishes life. His dark time would be filled with twists and turns that may make him be as depressed and cynical as Max but he did see a way out.

The dog barked and barked and barked. Nothing entered its mind.

Hanna was ready to return home as were the rest of the children. She was happy that she chose a dare this round but knew that it was going to be the last time she did so.
