Attractions of Dalat: #11Domaine de Marie

This French built Catholic convent was constructed in 1940, and is a working church, a nunnery and a school for local children. The distinctive pink building stands out among the greenery in which it sits. It is also a tomb for the body of Suzanne Humbert, who was the wife of the Governor General of Indochina, Jean Decoux. He was tragic killed in a traffic accident in 1944.

The strikingly beautiful Domaine de Marie

The Domaine de Marie sits on top of a hill overlooking the city. The pink limestone is strikingly beautiful. There is an unusual statue here of the Virgin Mary standing on a globe. What makes it unusual are the distinct Vietnamese features of her. Whilst the walls here are strongly French in their design, the roofs are very Vietnamese, resembling the Nha Rong, a type of stilt house found throughout the Central Highlands of Vietnam.

The delightful interior gardens

About two dozen nuns live here. They belong to the order of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. They look after other women and local children, many of whom suffer from hearing disabilities. From 2007 the church operates a kindergarten for 300 children, using the revenue from it to maintain the Convent complex.

The church holds services daily at 5pm on weekdays and twice on Sundays at 5:45 am and 4:30 pm.The Domaine de Marie is open to tourists and to the public
