Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!
Now known as the Unit Review Library!
What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!
In this series, I will review one unit at a time, picking them randomly.
So let me spin the wheel again and see what I get:
T'au Empire, Pathfinder Team
10th Edition Codex
Terrible and sneaky Xenos Scum. The T'au Empire are a tech-advanced race that fight for the philosophy of the Greater Good... or so they say.
Pathdfinders are, in a nutshell a squad that boosts other unit while supporting the army with some sniper shots.
A Squad of 10 costs 90pts and the box costs $28. Besides the T'au themselves, there are additional models for the Drones, but they are Wargear and do not have Wounds. They disappear when the unit dies.
Let's check their stats!
Stats
Movement 7"
Toughness 3
Save 4+(armor/invul/Feel No Pain) The invul is only against Ranged attacks.
Wounds 1
Ld 7+
OC 1
Weapons
Their base weapons are pulse carbine.
They have quite a bit of options which is sort of normal for T'au tech reliant units.
- 3 of the Pathfinders can wield either Ion Rifles or Rail Rifles.
- 1 of the Pathfinders can wield a semi-automatic grenade.
- The Shas'ui can have:
One of the following:
◦ 1 grav-inhibitor drone
◦ 1 pulse accelerator drone
◦ 1 recon drone
And up to two of the following, and can take duplicates:
◦ 1 gun drone
◦ 1 marker drone
◦ 1 shield drone
Ranged:
Pulse Carbine.
20" Range, 2 Attacks, Hitting on 4+, S5, AP0 and 1 Damage
It is a fair anti-infantry profile.
Rail Rifle
30" Range, 1 Attack, Hitting on 5+, S10, AP-4 and 3 Damage
Heavy, Devastating Wounds
This gun get's a +1 to Hit when standing still... they really need it for that weapon to go from 5+ to 4+ to hit. High Strength, AP and 3 flat damage.
Ion Rifle — standard (This weapon has two firing modes like Plasmaguns)
30" Range, 3 Attacks, Hitting on 5+, S7, AP-1 and 1 Damage
Heavy
Lots of shots and good for the Anti-Medium Infantry
Ion Rifle — overcharge (This weapon has two firing modes like Plasmaguns)
30" Range, 3 Attacks, Hitting on 5+, S8, AP-2 and 2 Damage
Heavy
Overcharged for Anti-Heavy Infantry.
Semi-automatic grenade launcher — EMP (This weapon has two firing modes as well)
18" Range, 1 Attack, Hitting on 4+, S3, AP0 and 1 Damage
Devastating Wound, Anti-Vehicle 4+
(So a 4+ to crit-wound and causing an auto-Devastating wound dealing 1 Damage... OK...)
Semi-automatic grenade launcher — fusion
18" Range, 1 Attack, Hitting on 4+, S6, AP-1 and 3 Damage
Great at punching down a Space Marine or a Terminator.
Melee:
As usual, totally negligible in Close Combat.
Close combat weapon
1 Attack, Hitting on 5+, S3, Ap0, 1 Damage each
Not much of a threat.
Abilities
Scouts 7"
Target Uploaded
This unit can act as the Spotter for two units in a T'au army. This is one of the main T'au synergies - units, acting as Guides to a Guided unit, granting the Guided a +1 to Hit. This unit does it twice per turn for different units!
Wargear Abilities
Slot 1 (2 of these)
◦ 1 gun drone - A drone with a gun (rifle level)
◦ 1 marker drone - The Squad has the Markerlight keyword for using Guided better.
◦ 1 shield drone - The bearer has +1W
Slot 2 (1 of these)
◦ 1 grav-inhibitor drone - -2" Charge to a unit attempting to charge this unit.
◦ 1 pulse accelerator drone - +6" Range to Pulse Carbines (26" Range then)
◦ 1 recon drone - This drone has a gun and the unit gains the Infiltrators Ability.
Thoughts
I know for a fact that these guys are often overlooked on the battlefield, but what they add to the enemy army dictates that they are actually a high priority target.
Not only that, but their own firepower is fairly useful.
Overall I feel that they are very well costed in points. I feel that they are dangerous because they can give two units a +1 to Hit. Then the Markerlight, which is a given, gives the Guided unit Ignores Cover as well!
So I would expect at least one of these units in a tournament
This is the 4th T'au Empire Datasheet reviewed putting them on 9.5% Completed and the total Completed on 8.13% Complete!
