Days 1-4: |Time|Global|room service|Inbox||
Below is day 5 combined with day 1, 2, 3, and 4.
He looked at the clock as its ticks and tocks carried on for an eternity. The time showed three minutes and forty-five seconds past twelve. He shifted his weight back and forth, his stick supporting his upper body.
The picture of a desert on the wall, adjacent to and below the clock, caught his eye as it reflected light from a door being opened. There, in the painted sand, a scorpion defended itself against a creature twice its size.
He felt he was going to have to bust some heads, his stick would be the scorpion’s tail.
A fly buzzed about and landed on the wall next to the clock. The time showed eighteen minutes and twelve seconds passed. The bookie was not there with his money, the affect would cost his inherited buildings.
"Damn, my nagga," said Magezi from behind, his voice hoarse, "did you know the global suicide rate is one in 5,000 - 15,000 people?" He stopped when he reached the table's edge. The table's felt was patched with duct tape, the leather pockets ripped, and the dead bumpers beers-stained. The stain bled into the center creating the image of a masked man.
"He'll be here," said Charlie as he gripped his stick tighter. He was ready to swing at the closest head. And run.
"My nigga, I know that, but just in case..." Magezi paused as he pulled up his pants, the belt not enough to keep them from falling below his butt cheeks. "You have the papers in your possession to sign over your company. No worries, dog. We know you've got our backs and wouldn't duck out on us, Charlie."
Charlie looked back at the clock. The fly on the clock's arm stood out like a sore thumb. The fly seemed to cry out to him in a high pitched voice, like Judge Doom after getting dipped, as the red hand passed underneath it, “It is now twenty-five minutes and twenty-five seconds past twelve.”
The stench of dirty socks filled his nose as one of the men, three-hundred pounds of fat over solid muscle, moved closer. He didn't move. That might trigger a response he wasn't ready to act on.
Magezi's phone rang. He took it from his pocket and answered. "Woman, whatcha want? ... No. You don't say. What blood clot room service maid would be dumb enough to pee in the trash can in your room? ... What did you do to that blood clot? ... Excellent." A smile crossed his face, reaching from ear to ear. "I knew my girl could take out the trash properly. Now I go, woman. I've got business to take care of here. Nigga got me waiting on my money."
The fly's buzzing caught the ears of Charlie as it circled around his head and then took off across the room where it landed on the table's side. Magezi moved his hand slowly in one motion toward the fly. Once his hand was in the range, he smacked the side of the table with lightning speed, killing the insect.
"That is what is going to happen to a nigga without my money," said Magezi exaggerating the last word. He wiped the fly's juices from his hand with a shirt given to him by one of his men.
Charlie gulped. He felt the sweat building up from gripping the stick so tightly.
"Hook me up with some cash and another episode," Magazi sang out, as he waved his hands in the air and jiggled his butt up and down.
Charlie stood silent, afraid that if he spoke it would be his last word. Magazi was taking note and enjoying Charlie's reaction.
The phone in Charlie’s pocket vibrated. He looked at it and saw a message: "Sorry, buddy. You'll have to hand over your business. Too many people won today and I had to pay up."
For a microsecond, Charlie's face showed anger before he quickly forced a smile.
Charlie's partner came up beside him. "Damn, partner. What happened in there?"
Charlie said in a low voice, "I... I don't know. I just sort of blacked out when the big man rushed me."
"Charlie, it looked like fucking Gotham City in there, that is, until the gas caught fire. We barely got everyone out. Great way to keep your cover but, you were supposed to keep the situation contained not destroy our lead to the King Pin."
Charlie was hardly listening. His thoughts were on the dramatic scene that took place when the leader, more trigger happy than expected, pulled his strap after seeing the brief microexpression cross his face. Quick for a guy who seemed wacked out of his mind.
Charlie hit the big man standing next to him in the heart with the butt of his stick and sent him into cardiac arrest. From there, he wanted to forget. He'd never taken a life before, and they don't teach you how to deal with that in the academy. When they asked, he'd just say he black out. Keep it simple he said to himself. Keep it simple.
